After setting the new record for the shortest time between the first trailer release and the premiere of the movie, the first teaser trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder is finally out! Featuring Chris Hemsworth as the first Marvel character to get his fourth solo film; Natalie Portman reprising her role as Jane Foster/Mighty Thor, and Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, both having made their last appearances in Thor: The Dark World (not counting Portman’s appearance via archival footage in Avengers: Endgame and Alexander’s uncredited appearance in Loki, and both of their appearances in Marvel Studios’ What If…? animated series); Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, the movie will premiere on July 8, 2022.
In addition to the aforementioned characters, the Guardians of the Galaxy will also return in this film, most likely setting up events in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, which will premiere in 2022 and 2023 respectively. However, the teaser trailer notably does not include Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, most likely due to the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame where Gamora was killed by Thanos, only for an alternative timeline version of her to appear alive, albeit not knowing the Guardians or of her romantic relationship with Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill.
The synopsis of the film stands thus:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late. Directed by Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “Jojo Rabbit”) and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, “Thor: Love and Thunder” opens in theaters July 8, 2022.
In the words of Chris Hemsworth himself, he describes it as having, “All the feels of a classic Thor adventure . Big, loud and Crazy and full of heart. You’ll laugh you’ll cry, then you’ll laugh so much you’ll cry some more!! Love and Thunder coming at you all July 8th!!”
In addition to the teaser trailer and official synopsis releases, a poster has been released featuring Thor hoisting Stormbreaker, the weapon that he obtained to replace Mjolnir, in Avengers: Endgame.
In the trailer, fans not only see Chris Hemsworth as Thor, but also get our first glimpse of Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor. With her appearance as Mighty Thor and us most likely getting a live-action version of Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (she already appeared in Marvel Studios’ What If…? animated series), it appears as though Marvel is finally embracing strong and muscular women as beautiful. The previous three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe primarily featured women as love interests (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter and the Netflix Marvel shows being the exception), but now they are finally stepping into their own, as shown in WandaVision, Black Widow, Hawkeye and more.
Before the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, however, there are still three more episodes of Moon Knight (to be released exclusively on Disney Plus), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (to be released exclusively in the cinemas on May 8) and Ms Marvel (to be released exclusively on Disney Plus starting on June 8) to watch first!
