The trailer for the upcoming Marvel series Ms Marvel starring Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms Marvel is finally here! This is the first time that a Muslim superhero comes to our screens; Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American teenager whose series arrives on Disney Plus on June 8, 2022.
The trailer promises to be very different from the previous Disney Plus shows that we have already seen. WandaVision was primarily about grief and loss in a sitcom comedy, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had a more buddy-cop relationship, Loki was a mystery thriller about the Time Keepers, Hawkeye was a Christmas comedy and What If…? was an animated show that took place in alternate timelines, although some of the characters who premiered in that show seem to be making a live-action appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!
Ms Marvel promises to deal with teenage angst, something that hasn’t been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before now. In the trailer, Kamala Khan struggles with dreaming too much, not knowing her future plans for after school and crushes on guys. The song “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd in the background is evidential that this is centered more around teenage problems.
In the comics, Kamala Khan is an Inhuman, who underwent Terrigenesis, before gaining extraordinary powers. However, in the trailer, it is confirmed that her powers come from gauntlets, not a Terrigen crystal. The reason behind the change is unknown, although seeing as the ABC Inhumans show was a major flop, it’s possible that the Powers That Be behind Marvel are choosing to avoid associating themselves with said show. However, on the other hand, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. featured Inhumans and is the first and longest-running Marvel show with 7 seasons and 136 episodes and, according to Rotten Tomatoes, is still the second-highest ranked Marvel project of all time, just behind Black Panther.
Kamala Khan / Ms Marvel isn’t only slated to appear in her solo Disney Plus series. She will also be appearing in The Marvels, the sequel to Captain Marvel and continuation to the series Ms Marvel, starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, who first appeared in Captain Marvel and WandaVision respectively.
Even though the origin of Ms Marvel’s powers has been changed, the show still promises to be extremely exciting and certainly different from all the other Disney Plus series that have already premiered and will premiere – Moon Knight suggests to be a psychological thriller.
