The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer first was shown in the second end-credits scene for Spider-Man: No Way Home, which premiered a few days ago to amazing results. Spider-Man: No Way Home is now known as the “greatest Marvel movie of all time” and Doctor Strange is following in its footsteps with cameos and “more characters” from the multiverse, something that was announced when it was announced there would be reshoots for some of the scenes that finished earlier this week.
In the Doctor Strange trailer, viewers see Doctor Strange approaching Wanda, asking her what she knows about the multiverse. Both reference the events of Westview that happened in WandaVision, the first Marvel movie/TV show to premiere this year. In addition to Wanda, other characters who were seen in the trailer include Monica Rambeau, who premiered in WandaVision, Wong, who in No Way Home was shown to be the new Sorcerer Supreme, Christine Palmer, who first appeared in the first Doctor Strange movie, the evil Doctor Strange, who premiered in What If…?, and America Chavez, portrayed by Marvel-newcomer Xochitl Gomez.
The premise of What If…? was that it took place in alternate timelines, different from the ones that Marvel viewers usually know. However, due to the events of WandaVision, Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, the multiverse is in chaos in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Doctor Strange became evil in What If…? because he lost his heart; he lost Christine Palmer due to the inevitability of her death; “Her death is an absolute point in time. Unchangeable. Unmovable. If you erase her death, you never start your journey.”
In the trailer, viewers see Christine Palmer in a wedding dress, thus she is marrying someone, most likely some version of Doctor Strange, whether the one from the Marvel universe that fans know, or some other version. While Doctor Strange and Christine ended the last Doctor Strange movie as friends, they were romantically involved in the past, and it stands to reason that Doctor Strange would try to protect her at all costs. Another hint towards this would be what Peter said in No Way Home: “Come on, Strange, have a heart”. The episode in which Doctor Strange turned into the evil Doctor Strange was called: “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?” which is another reference towards the evil Doctor Strange that is apparently the greatest threat to the multiverse, as claimed in the trailer.
In addition to the trailer, Marvel also released the first Doctor Strange poster today, which features various versions and angles of Doctor Strange and Wanda aka the Scarlet Witch. While both are obviously main characters in the movie, it stands to reason that there will be many versions of them. Loki ended with the multiverse being opened; it is possible that viewers will get to see more variants of Doctor Strange, Wanda and Loki in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
