If you aren’t familiar with our Bookstagrammer of the Week segments, then let me fill you in a bit! Every week, our fabulous outreach team here at Bookstr talks with different Bookstagrammers who we think you would adore! We interview them about different things, but it’s always bookish and unique to each creator! For example, Zahra of @flowergirlbooks (our current Bookstagrammer of the Week) isn’t afraid to boast her love of T. Swift, so of course we had to cater a few questions to that! Get the idea? Awesome, now let’s talk to Zahra!
Zahra, if your Booksta feed tells us anything it’s that you have a passion for reading! We might just be a cat called Curiousity, but when did you first get into reading?
I’ve been a reader for as long as I can remember! My mother, who loved reading herself, was the one who bought me books when I didn’t even know I actually wanted them. I also feel incredibly lucky because I’ve been surrounded by readers all my life. Most of my friends in high school also loved to read and we would share our favorite books with each other. My sister is also a huge reader herself and I’m so grateful that she puts up with my fan girling and rants.
It’s always nice to have someone to vent to! My roommate is usually on the recieving end of mine and I don’t think that was in her lease agreement! And personally, I don’t believe in gatekeeping, so let us in on the real real.
Where are you from? And do you have a favorite bookstore close to home?
I’m from sunny South Africa and live in the city of Durban. The bookstore I frequent most is Bargain Books (@bargainbookssa) in Westwood Mall because it’s close to home. If I had to pick a favorite store, I’d go with the Exclusive Books (@exclusivebooks) located in La Lucia Mall – they have the best selections.
As you know the 2023 has just kicked off with a bit of a bang! Already some bookish drama going on, so it’s nice to be able to center ourselves.
Do you have any bookish resolutions for 2023 that you want to stick to?
To read all the physical books I own for once instead of buying more and hopefully finish at least one or two classics!
You definitely have some gorgeous physical copies to indulge in! All of those special and collector’s editions look amazing on your feed!
Do you have a genre that you find yourself gravitating towards most often?
Fantasy always. Reading is my escape and I just prefer a world of magic and wonder. However, I’ve been introduced to the world of dark romance by a few of my Bookstagram friends and I’ve been loving it! Shout out to @dbookishprincess, @zahira.reads and @maras__books!
You’re clearly a lover of Taylor Swift! And really, who can blame you for loving the blonde?
Are there any Taylor Swift albums or specific songs that you associate with certain books?
Taylor is my favorite storyteller! I mainly associate her songs with characters rather than the books themselves. Here are a few from Midnights album since it’s brand new:
Connecting with characters and storylines is one of the best parts of reading! As an avid reader, such as yourself, you’ve encountered a number of amazing characters!
Which literary character do you feel most connected to, and why?
Gwyneth Berdara from A Court of Silver Flames. She is unwaveringly optimistic despite the trauma she has been through. I absolutely love how resilient she is. Gwyn’s personality is sunshine personified. Plus she’s a reader herself and a singer! So you just know she loves Taylor Swift as well. I can’t wait to see more of her in whatever SJM writes.
Our time with Zahra is coming to a close, but we love to close on a fun note! Is there anything else that you want to tell us about yourself Zahra?
I’m a huge lover of fan fiction! Dramione to be specific (Draco Malfoy x Hermione Granger). There was a time where all I consumed was fan fiction for three years straight. I was obsessed! I couldn’t get enough! They were my everything.
It’s how I found one of my favorite authors: Olivie Blake. Yes, the same author of The Atlas Six, I devoured all her pieces and reread them a million times! My favorite fan fic ever written is by her and it’s called The Commoner’s Guide to Bedding Royal— it’s over 500,000 words long! After I completed it the first time, I didn’t know what to do with myself. I felt empty! It was just THAT GOOD, so I was completely suffering through a book hangover and hit a massive slump when I was done.
This was when I decided to go back to reading traditionally published books and picked up A Court of Thorns and Roses by SJM for the very first time in 2018 The ACOTAR series will always hold a special place in my heart since it got me to fall back in love with the world of fantasy.
Side Note: if anyone is interested in reading a Dramione fan fic, I highly recommend you start with Clean by Olivie Blake on the website AO3. It’s the perfect fic to introduce you to this ship!
I’d definitely say that Zahra is leaving us on a fun note! If you’re wanting more Draco Malfoy fan fiction content, we’ve got an article for you here!
