New Novel Set In Ember In The Ashes Universe Announced

Sabaa Tahir is expanding her “Ember in the Ashes” universe in this newly announced novel. Read on to get a glimpse of what to expect from the fantasy author’s new book.

After taking a break from the fantasy genre with her contemporary fiction novel, All My Rage, Sabaa Tahir is back to what she knows best. broke the news this week on Tahir’s new fantasy romance titled Heir, that takes place in the same world as her bestseller An Ember in the Ashes.

Same World, New Characters

The author, who’s won a National Book Award and a Printz Award, offered a glimpse into the plot of Heir with an overview of the story’s three main characters. Aiz, is an orphan who gets imprisoned. Sirsha is an outcast whose job as a tracker could “end up costing her her heart, both romantically and literally,” Tahir explained. While Quil is a crown prince with no desire to rule, but must lead his empire after an enemy appears.

Tahir further revealed that romance will play a part in the book’s storyline as a major subplot, saying, “Expect longing, spice, and maybe a little bit of heartbreak.”

For New Readers And Fans Alike

Though the new novel is set 20 years after the events of An Ember in the Ashes, new readers can come into Heir without having read its predecessor. However, there will be easter eggs for fans of the original series.

An Ember in the Ashes follows a slave named Laia, who becomes a spy for a rebel group as part of a mission to save her brother. When she infiltrates the greatest military academy in this tyrannical empire — inspired by ancient Rome — Laia meets Elias, the academy’s best soldier and their fates intertwine.

Tahir teased that Heir would be just as brutal as her previous work. She quipped, “On the ‘evil author’ scale, I’d say this is probably at 4 knives. Don’t worry! I’m saving the last knife for the sequel.”

The book is scheduled to be published in October of this year.
