A Saratoga Springs bookshop has garnered new attention from social media after a viral tweet from author Melissa Caruso introduced users to the shop’s labyrinthine interior. From the outside, Lyrical Ballad Bookstore seems like an ordinary shop, but inside, locals and tourists describe the place as nothing short of magical.

Melissa Caruso, author of The Tethered Mage, recently shared a lengthy Twitter thread detailing the amazing wonders of this one-of-a-kind bookshop. The tweet quickly blew up, earning over 97k likes and 15k retweets.

In the thread, Caruso details the shop’s labyrinthine interior full of seemingly endless rooms of books.

“You can’t actually count the rooms,” Caruso writes.

“There are too many hallways and odd little niches full of books to even know what a room is anymore. Rooms open into corridors open into rooms. Space has become meaningless as it expands far, FAR beyond what should be possible given the outside dimensions of the store. By this point, you are lost. You don’t ever want to be found again.”

Officially, Lyrical Ballad Bookstore houses eight rooms full of over 200,000 books, including some that are over 100 years old. Yes, you read that right. In fact, Lyrical Ballad Bookstore is home to a signed copy of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Though that glorious signed copy of Dracula isn’t for sale, there are still plenty of old treasures to be found in the shop.

“Some of the books are newer. Some are your favorite paperbacks from childhood. Others are 100 years old or more, just sitting there on the shelves. You can pick them up, handle them, breathe them in,” Caruso says.

“I had to get SOMETHING. I wanted to support this magical place. My teens (completely spellbound as time slipped by) helped me look. Really we wanted a magical tome of ancient spells, but we found this beautiful 1883 illustrated edition of Gray’s Elegy.”

You never know what you’ll find in this shop, according to Caruso.

As Caruso and her daughter paged through the 130+-year-old book, they made an amazing discovery. Tucked within the pages was a hand-painted bookmark from 1888!

“We paged through, looking at the illustrations, wondering at holding a 130+-year-old book in our hands. Then my daughter turned the page and we all froze. There was a bookmark there. A lovely, hand-painted bookmark, still touched between the pages of the book,” Caruso said.

“It had been there long enough to leave a permanent shadow on the facing page, a discoloration matching the bookmark. We turned more pages, reverentially, and found another one. Easter Souvenir, 1888, it said. I won’t lie, my pulse was RACING. Someone had put those bookmarks there 130 years ago, and there they remained, a little paused moment in time.”

Besides hidden gems like the bookmark Caruso and her daughter found, Lyrical Ballad Bookstore offers original movie posters, antique prints, and maps. They even have a literal book vault, where they house rare and fragile books, some of which are first editions!

The best part about Lyrical Ballad Bookstore is the fact that their Internet presence is pretty low-key because they pride themselves on in-person interactions in the store. They also have a major claim to fame due to their relationship with major film and television productions. The store has sold numerous books to be featured in productions like Succession and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

While they don’t have an official website, Lyrical Ballad Bookstore does have a Facebook page you can check out. Or, you can go visit this magical bookstore in person and peruse their endless shelves of new and old books for hours. Don’t worry, we won’t judge. In fact, you’ll probably catch me wandering the aisles and staring at the signed copy of Dracula, just like Gollum stares at the One Ring.
