While the real world seems to be falling, there is always a good dystopian book waiting to take you away to a broken world that has the potential to be fixed. Dystopian novels strike a chord in all their readers, bringing them into social, cultural, and political conditions of the world that reflect the state of the world in which the book was written. These newly released dystopian novels will have you embarking on an adventure through unique worlds with characters you may know and love, and characters you may not know yet.
Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins
Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins is the latest addition to the young adult franchise The Hunger Games and is the fifth book in the series. Despite it being the most recent in the publishing order, it is a prequel to the series’ first book. It was released March 18, 2025, and already has a confirmed movie in the works.
The story follows everyone’s favorite mentor, Haymitch Albernathy. Growing up in District 12 was rough, but he made do with his job and his lover Lenore Dove. After a tragic reaping day. Haymitch battles through heartbreak, as well as coping with the fact that he is a tribute for the 50th Hunger Games, and the second Quarter Quell. This year’s rules are different, as each District must present two people — two male, two female — totalling four people from each District. In what promises to be a bloody battle, Haymitch grapples with doubt and ultimate acceptance of his “inevitable” demise. Through betrayal, twists, and some familiar faces, Collins writes a dystopian world reflecting on the current political climate.
Watch Me by Tahereh Mafi

Watch Me by Tahereh Mafi is the newly anticipated book in the Shatter Me young adult series, released on April 15, 2025. The Shatter Me series consists of six main books, and 5 novellas. While this book is the start of a new Shatter Me collection following new characters, it is the 12th book in the series.
A decade after Aaron Warner and Julette Ferrars’s rebellion that took down most of the Reestablishment, a new story begins. James Anderson, Aaron’s younger brother, gets into Ark Island: a high-defense, high-tech Reestablishment base. There, he meets a highly trained assassin, Rosabelle Wolff, who wants nothing more than to protect her sick younger sister. While the Reestablishment is planning something devastating, Rosabelle and James fight feelings and prying eyes. Mafi’s presentation of a high-tech dystopian world seems all too real, but the enemies-to-lovers subplot will have you giggling and kicking your feet.
Fable for the End of the World by Ava Reid
Ava Reid’s newest young adult queer dystopian novel, Fable for the End of the World, creates a Hunger Games-esque apocalyptic world which pulls people into the questions of what makes us human and presents a loving queer relationship even in the darkest of times. It is a standalone novel that was released on March 4, 2025.
In a world where tyranny rules and debt is encouraged yet also punished on a livestream spectacle, two very different girls’ lives unfold in dangerous ways. Inesa, an impoverished girl who lives in a town half under water, is being used as a sacrifice for her mother’s high debts. However, survival is all she has ever known, and this livestream assassination won’t scare her away. Melinoë, an expert assassin for the tyrannical corporation, is set to kill Inesa. Though she has never failed a mission, her reputation was tarnished, and she will take it back. However, through an unexpected love, the two girls start to question everything they know. Reid’s story pushes the boundaries of what we think we understand, and it’ll have you eating up every word.
All Better Now by Neal Shusterman
All Better Now is a young adult dystopian thriller novel written by New York Times Bestseller Neal Shusterman. It is a standalone novel that deals with the power of emotion on the human race and the power of the government. It was released on February 4, 2025.
When an illness plagues the world, the symptoms are unusual to say the least. A fever first, but once that passes, any negative emotions the victim has ever felt disappear for good. The population rejoices. Who could not want a world where everyone is happy? Well, the CEOs, the government, and the people in power don’t. They need the discontent of the citizens to prey on them to push their own agendas. Forcing cures and fear-mongering, they will stop at nothing to get rid of this unending happiness. Meanwhile, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, Mirel Mudroch and Rón Escobedo, learn their strange connections to the virus and must uncover the truth. In this post-pandemic world, Shusterman’s novel forces us to look at the parallels of his plot to our own reality.
Immaculate Conception by Ling Ling Huang
Immaculate Conception by Ling Ling Huang is her latest adult horror dystopian novel. Huang has created a dystopian world with advanced technology and forces the readers to look deeply into the themes of obsession and competition within friendship. It was released May 13, 2025, making it the most recent on this list.
The story begins when a struggling creative, Enka, meets the extremely talented artist Mathilde and the two become best friends. While Enka has a hard time with originality, Mathilde is stuck in trauma that haunts her. Their friendship starts to become unhealthy when Mathilde’s fame grows, and Enka becomes obsessed with her. However, that isn’t the only thing to be worried about. Enka falls for a man whose family is in the technology business. A device to heighten empathy is created, and soon becomes a threat to Mathilde. Huang pushes the boundaries of friendship as well as the boundaries of technology in a dystopian setting not seen before.
Dystopian novels will never go out of style, and there are dozens more coming out. Though the ultimately dark and thought-provoking themes that occur in dystopian novels can be heavy, these new stories will give you new characters, new relationships, and new worlds to fall in love with.
