It’s Halloween, which means trick-or-treating season! Everyone has fond memories of this popular holiday. Nostalgic times from when you were a child and running door to door giddy with excitement. Wondering which treats sitting at the bottom of your pumpkin would you have to hide from your parents or siblings later. Or maybe there was a certain house you avoided that was notorious for handing out carrots and pretzels. Now we’re older and it’s our time to stand on the other side of the door and hand out all the goodies and candy.

The More Chocolate The Better
Best: Milk Chocolate. Any kind.
Worst: Twizzlers
You can’t go wrong with chocolate. That’s my take. Snickers, Milky Way, maybe a Twix — I’ll take it. I will say, though, that my favorite Halloween candy is Tootsie Rolls, which my friends judge me for, but, hey, more for me. Tootsie Pops, too. When it comes to lollipops, I always reach for those.
As for the worst candy to receive, it’s going to be Twizzlers for me. I love gummy candy — it’s up there with chocolate — but Twizzlers are not my thing. I’ve only had them once as a kid, and I remember my mom warning me that they were bad. But it was red gummy candy, how could they be bad? They were terrible. I couldn’t get the flavor out of my mouth; it was disgusting. I don’t know if the recipe’s changed since, but I learned my lesson.

A Classic Crunchy Candy Bar
Best: KitKat/Twix
Worst: Candy Corn
The combination of smooth chocolate, crunchy wafers, or the delightful caramel crunch of a Twix is unmatched. These candies always felt like a reward after hours of walking through the neighborhood in costume, making the effort worthwhile after my legs were hurting so badly.
On the other hand, the worst candy was always candy corn. That overly sweet, waxy texture just didn’t do it for me — I’d immediately toss them to the bottom of the bag or trade them with my friends for something else that I’d like. I always thought that it looked so good but when I tasted it, I was reminded to not judge something by its cover.

The Far Too Chewy Twizzlers
Best: Snickers (King-Size)
Worst: Twizzlers
I love milk chocolate, but the nuts and caramel make Snickers the perfect mix of all those ingredients that balance so well with chocolate. I’ve never been a fan of just plain chocolate, so I instantly became obsessed with Snickers. And if I were lucky, I would get some king-size Snickers that I would keep to myself.
The worst candy for me has to be Twizzlers. I had an unfortunate experience with Twizzlers where my aunt wanted me to try it on a road trip, and after one hesitant bite, my stomach turned inside out. Since then, I have never eaten Twizzlers again, and I always trade any Twizzlers I get in my pillowcase for anything in exchange.

The Universally Hated Candy Corn
Best: Full-Size Chocolate Bars
Worst: Candy Corn
Hershey Almond is my favorite candy bar but hard to come by when trick or treating. I will take almost any chocolate and if it’s a king-size, even better! Reese’s comes in as a close second mostly because they make them in fun shapes like pumpkins that add to the experience.
Candy corn is probably the most hated Halloween candy, but I think the worst is peanut butter kisses. They are the candy wrapped in orange or black wrappers. Don’t let the name fool you. They are nothing like you imagine when you hear the name.

Underappreciated Creamy White Chocolate
Best: anything with white chocolate or anything that can be snacked on
Worst: anything sour
I don’t mind my milk chocolate (give me an Almond Joy any day) but I’ve loved white chocolate since I had a white chocolate Reese’s cup as a kid. I can’t quite say why I love it so much, maybe it’s not as sweet or just has a more consistent flavor than milk chocolate, but I go crazy for it. I also love candy that can be snacked on over a few days, like Mike & Ike’s, Sour Patch Kids, Werther’s Originals, etc.
That said, I don’t want anything overly sour. Sour Patch Kids are about as far as I go in that department.

The Dreaded Payday
Best: Butterfingers & Candy Corn
Worst: Payday Candy Bar
Candy corn gets all this hate for no reason. People say they don’t like the way it tastes, but it tastes like pure sugar. Exactly what I want from my candy! And you can only get it around Halloween which makes it that much more special. Butterfingers are also a classic with that amazing crunch I want in a candy bar.
Paydays are for old people (no offense) and are literally just peanuts smashed together. No thanks.

A Stale and Bland Tootsie Roll
Best: Reese’s Peanut Buttercups
Worst: Tootsie Rolls
I love anything with peanut butter in it. I eat peanut butter straight out of the jar with a spoon as if it were a tub of ice cream and I’m not ashamed. There’s no better duo than chocolate and peanut butter.
Tootsie Rolls are the candy found at the bottom of the candy bowl (and a grandma’s purse) all the time. The taffy texture is terrible, it gets stuck in your teeth, and the flavor tastes like stale chocolate. If you want something that tastes like chocolate, literally eat anything else.

Clearly, chocolate is a fan favorite that can’t go wrong. Although maybe not so much on dark chocolate. Hopefully, this helped spark a better idea in mind on what to give out this Halloween. Or perhaps jogged your memory on a candy from your childhood you might have forgot about.
