Ah, how I’ve missed Joe Goldberg’s chaotic inner monologue. Or, should I say Professor Jonathan Moore? It’s a new season, a new city, and of course, a new alias for our problematic stalker protagonist. And, in typical YOU fashion, a gruesome plot twist is in store. Check out the official trailer below, before we dive into the details!
The Trailer
Hello, you.
In the first half of the trailer, it appears that Joe is, once again, resorting to his stalker pattern. As we know from the Season 3 finale, he went across the pond in search of current love/obsession, Marienne. However, it seems as if his hope to live happily ever after will quickly crumble (surprise, surprise). Especially since, well, he’s a murderer – as Marienne says to his face in the trailer.
Though he may seem dedicated to proving her wrong and reestablishing a connection, once Joe sets his sights on a new British gal, it seems like we’re in for a repeat of last season. That is, until the trailer takes a sharp turn, showing that YOU will continue to keep us all hooked by staying ever so unpredictable.
Keeping us all on our toes, the trailer reveals that Joe may not be the only murderer in London. Apparently, there’s a new foe on the loose, dubbed the “eat-the-rich-killer.” And, as much as Joe may plan on “laying low,” we all know he has an affinity for getting roped into a whole lot of mess. In this case, it looks like his sly, stalker role is turned upside down when he becomes the target of ominous messages.
Set to get a taste of his own medicine, Joe’s Season 4 journey, based on the trailer, will involve balancing his deranged pursuit of love with playing detective in a murder mystery. In my eyes, “Professor Jonathan Moore” appears to be in over his head.
New Cast
Another exciting development to the official trailer release is our first look at the new and expanded cast for this season. Something that YOU has done particularly well since season 1 is incorporate a mass of unique secondary characters who shape and enrich the story. One can expect the same phenomenon in this London-based “next chapter.”
Besides Penn Badgley and Tati Gabrielle reprising their roles as Joe and Marienne, we have new characters rounding out this stacked cast which includes Tilly Keeper as Lady Pheobe, Charlotte Richie as Kate, Ozioma Whenu as Blessing, Ed Speleers as Rhys, and Lukas Gage as Adam. The latter you may recognize from HBO hit The White Lotus or as the guy who got beaten to a pulp by Nate Jacobs on Euphoria. Want to know more about the full cast list? Click here.
Two-Part Season
Finally, it’s also important to note that this trailer is for Part 1 of the season, debuting February 9th. The decision to split the season in two is an interesting one – mirroring the tactic of last year’s long-awaited return of Stranger Things. For Netflix, this can very well be a happy medium between the binge model and keeping audiences coming back for more.
As we all look forward to February 9th for Part 1 and March 9th for Part 2, it’s impossible to refrain from speculation about the identity of Joe’s mysterious stalker. Admittedly, I’m still gunning for my girl Love Quinn to somehow rise from the dead and seek revenge. Oh well, we’ll just have to lie in wait with our fan theories until the truth is revealed next month.
