In a shocking turn of events, an indie romance author has seemingly risen from the dead. Back in 2020, the daughter of Susan Meachen took to Facebook to announce that her mother had “passed away.” According to her, the supposed late author tragically took her own life after experiencing harassment from competitors and readers within the romance community. However, it has now become apparent that this wasn’t actually the case.
Plot Twist: Susan Meachen Returns After Being Presumed Dead
Last week, Meachen wrote in her private 770-member Facebook group “The Ward” for the first time in over two years. In her post, the author revealed that she has actually been alive this entire time. Further, she also hinted at struggles with her mental health being the reason behind her disappearance.
“I debated on how to do this a million times and still not sure if it’s right or not,” the author began. “There’s going to be tons of questions and a lot of people leaving the group I’d guess. But my family did what they thought was best for me and I can’t fault them for it.”
“I almost died again at my own hand and they had to go through all that hell again. Returning to The Ward doesn’t mean much but I am in a good place now and I am hoping to write again. Let the fun begin.”
Reactions to Meachen’s Reappearance
Not exactly sure all of the chaos that has followed Meachen’s return can be described as “fun.” Understandably, fans and authors who mourned her death have mixed emotions. In addition, a select group of romance writers feel betrayed after dedicating an anti-bullying anthology in her honor. One Twitter user shared images of the dedication, along with the initial post confirming Meachen’s “death.”
Other members of the book community also took to Twitter to react to the news. One user mentioned how people “started to buy [Meachen’s] books to support her family” after the news of her death. Others felt as though Meachen was gaslighting the community. One thing is for sure—the indie romance author’s reappearance has caused quite a stir amongst readers and writers alike.
Many are also suspicious in regards to Meachen’s actual motives for disappearing. It’s fair to say that Meachen was not super successful, with varying reviews and most books retailing for a mere $2.99. Following the announcement of her “death,” the account continued to promote her “final” novel Love to Last a Lifetime for months. Multiple people, some of whom had never read Meachen’s books, were saddened by the news of her passing and purchased the text in support of her family. As a result, some have speculated this could have been a stunt to bolster sales.
Either way, Susan Meachen has made an explosive return to the book community and is planning to continue writing. Will she be able to top this plot twist? Only time will tell.
Over the past few days, more and more information about Meachen’s faked death has been revealed. It will be interesting to see how this story further unravels.
