This week, author Rebecca Ross announced on her Instagram that her popular 2023 YA fantasy novel, Divine Rivals, is in the process of being adapted into a film by Paramount Pictures. Ross expressed excitement that Sofia Alvarez, scriptwriter for the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before film series, would be writing the script for the film.

The Book That Started It All

Divine Rivals is the first novel in Ross’s young adult romantasy duology, Letters of Enchantment. It centers around two rival journalists — Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt — who write about a war between two gods, Dacre and Enva. Iris’ brother is a soldier who has gone missing on the front lines, and Iris begins writing letters to him and slipping them under the wardrobe door, a method used by Iris and her family in the past.

Thinking the letters would just pile up in the closet, the letters instead appear unknowingly in Roman Kitt’s wardrobe. Anonymously, he begins writing her back, and the two form a relationship that Iris carries with her to the front lines.

Praise for the Book

Divine Rivals won the Goodreads Choice Award 2023 for Best Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction and spent 125 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. It grew to fame through BookTok and Bookstagram and is rated 4.16 stars on Goodreads.

Ross has promised more news to come, but in the meantime, she will serve as an executive producer on the project.

“I’m honored to have such an incredible team for this project, and I’m also very excited to come onboard as executive producer.”
