Since the seventies, video games have taken the world by storm. Pong consumed millions of gamers’ weekends as they spent hours with two-dimensional paddles and a ball. With 2023 approaching, we can expect new eyes on familiar video games. Video game adaptations are becoming more popular because of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us making its debut on HBO.

After a longer and more informative trailer dropped two weeks ago, the hype for The Last of Us is through the roof. The Last of Us isn’t the only video game adaptation happening next year. In March, you should expect to see A Dungeons & Dragons movie, and in April, The Super Mario Bros movie is coming out. In the TV show world, The Witcher‘s third season will be airing sometime in the summer.

The Game

Released in 2013, The Last of Us as a game is admired for its graphics, strenuous stealth missions, and impressive adversaries. But as a story, the admiration goes even further. Players watch a bond form between a reluctant, hardened man (who used to be a father) and a sharp-tongued, curious thirteen-year old amid a plague-infested world. Both of them undergo a series of tribulations pressuring their character and peace of mind, but they stay together through it all.

Fans are relieved to see the adaptation will stay true to the video game. From impressive renditions of the show’s zombies, called clickers, to fresh embodiments of beloved and well-known characters, The Last of Us is looking to do extremely well. Beyond online approval, professionals have a lot to say as well.

In an interview with Empire, HBO’s showrunner for The Last of Us Craig Mazin made a big statement.

“It’s an open-and-shut case: this is the greatest story that has ever been told in video games,” Mazin decided.

The Last of Us has long been considered one of the best stories within video games after accepting numerous awards applauding its story and script, including the Writers Guild of America Award for Achievement in Videogame Writing and BAFTA Games Award for Story. But recent video game adaptations have elevated already compelling video game stories, with examples like Netflix’s exceptionally well received Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Arcane.

“Games themselves are often brilliant to play, and not at all brilliant to watch when dramatized,” continued Mazin. “Neil and I always knew to ask, ‘Why are we only doing what’s in the game? What can we do to expand?'”
