You’ve probably heard that one Christmas song, “On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…” While that’s a great sentiment and all, what about what we would give to our true loves? Specifically, what would we give our favorite characters to show them how much they mean to us?
For this edition of Schnookster, we’re getting into the giving spirit. Read on to see what the Bookstr team would give their truest loves: fictional characters!
Syaoran Li from Cardcaptor Sakura and Anya Forger from Spy x Family
I’m gonna cheat and gift to two of my favorites because I’d give them both the same thing: the world. I’m talking about you, Syaoran Li and Anya Forger — though Anya would probably prefer peanuts. Children are the future, and it’s a bright one with these two at its helm. So, under no authority, I’m handing the planet over to them to watch over like a snow globe.

Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado from Demon Slayer
So, this will be an uber-sad one and a bit of a spoiler (not really) for anyone who hasn’t watched the anime but wants to or soon will. This particular anime rocked my heart from so many angles that I still can’t see Tanjiro without my heartstrings tugging and my eyes watering, even just a little. After viciously losing most of his family and nearly losing his sister to a demon, Tanjiro works so hard to avenge them. But he does so with such care in his heart along with his determination. And the way he looks after his younger sister is truly endearing. I think he’s so deserving of getting his family back, which is why I would want to gift that to him so badly. It would surely bring him — and his sister — endless joy and would be worth the happy tears that’d pour down my face! This wish is for you, Tanjiro and Nezuko!

Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas
This might be kind of cliché for him but I would give Jack a bone-shaped gingerbread cookie cutter for Christmas. It’s well known that Jack loves both Halloween and Christmas time so giving him something that he can celebrate both with I think would be perfect. And obviously, the spooky design of a bone keeps it aligned with his character and vibes.

Niko Sasaki from Dead Boy Detectives
There are many things I would love to give Niko. More manga, more anime posters, and a limitless credit card so she can buy her and me some killer outfits. But I think what she deserves the most is a good Magic 8 Ball. She needs to get rid of that cursed one she has and get one that only has good outcomes ahead because sweet girl Niko deserves nothing but good things her way!

Sherlock Holmes from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Classic Detective Stories
If I could give Sherlock anything, it would be a state-of-the-art smart home assistant like Alexa. This AI-powered gadget would not only start his morning brew, order groceries, and keep track of his cases, but it might offer witty banter and sarcastic remarks to keep him on his toes. Alexa could finally give Mrs. Hudson a break from Sherlock’s eccentric demands.

Gu Won and Cheon Sarang from King the Land
Those of us who’ve watched King the Land remember the hilarious scene where the main characters Gu Won and Cheon Sarang play a game of luck at a neighborhood stall to win the rare prize of a king fish made of hardened candy. After many tries, the two finally won the game due to teamwork: only for the fish to be comically shattered in an otherwise romantic scene. Later, we find Gu Won kept the remnants of the candy fish for sentimentality despite having a crazy amount of money that could buy a million more of those fish if he wanted (because of course). But that just made me disappointed: at least give them a refund, dang it! If I were to give this rich couple anything, it would be the luck and chance to win a new candy fish, perfectly intact, so they can actually share and eat it together this time.

Sadie Green from Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
Content Warning: Spoilers for the end of the book ahead.
This book was out of my comfort zone, but I was intrigued by the idea of friends being close, but never in love within a story. The story focuses on Sadie and Sam’s friendship. It ends up being that Sadie falls in love with Marx, who is Sam’s roommate from college, and the three of them all start a business together. I was really enjoying the story until closer to the end when Marx is killed and Sadie is left pregnant and alone. I would give her the gift of time travel so that she can go back and save Marx. I hate when bad things happen to good people, and I’m a sucker for happily ever afters.
