It’s official! D23, the Disney event, that has panels, announcements, trailer releases and posters for new Disney Plus shows, has released the teaser trailer for the upcoming Percy Jackson series! The series will air on Disney Plus and stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood.
In the teaser trailer, there is a voiceover from Walker Scobell, who plays Percy Jackson, starting with a slightly altered, but nonetheless very accurate, iconic first lines from the Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief book. He says:
“Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood. Being a half-blood is dangerous. It’s scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed. If you think you might be one of us, turn away while you still can. Believe whatever lie your mom or dad told you about your birth and try to live a normal life. Because once you know what you are, they’ll sense it too. And they’ll come for you. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
While there have been some concerns and complaints about the casting, the teaser trailer is proof that Rick Riordan is very determined to keep this adaptation accurate to the book. The costumes of the campers are extremely accurate and given how similar the voiceover is to the text in the book, it stands to reason that this adaptation will be exactly what Percy Jackson fans have been wanting!
At D23, Rick Riordan took to the stage and announced:
“I cannot believe that at last, Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show is coming to life!” Riordan exclaimed as he took the stage. “And Disney+ I think is the perfect home for it. [The Walt Disney Company] have been behind the books from the very beginning, and they’ve helped us assemble a world-class team to help bring this story to the screen.”
The stars also took to the stage to introduce (or re-introduce, seeing as book fans know the characters very well) their characters.
Scobell describes Percy as, “Percy is funny, he’s witty. He’s very sarcastic. He’s very hot-headed. I’m just incredibly grateful to portray one of Rick’s characters. We all are. I promise you, I will always try my hardest every single day to bring Percy Jackson to life for all of us.”
Jeffries’ take on her character, Annabeth Chase, demigod daughter of Athena is: “She’s smart, she’s nice, and she’s also… You have to really impress her to be her friend,” Jeffries revealed. “She’s supportive and she’s a fighter. She’s amazing and I love playing her.
As for Simhadri, who plays Grover, says, “He’s kind of the protector of the group. He becomes fast friends with Percy at Yancy [Academy] and that helps guides their journey when Percy and Annabeth finally meet.”
To say that the trailer is a teaser is the truth. While there are shots of the camp and campers, more detailed footage of the main characters and their quest has yet to be revealed. Fans will simply have to wait to get more looks at the world of Camp Half-Blood.
