At this weekend’s D23 event, Marvel had a massive panel that included announcements and footage released from various upcoming Marvel movies and shows! Included in the list was Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion, an upcoming Disney Plus show featuring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine and more!
Secret Invasion will center around the Skrulls, a shape-shifting alien race that was first introduced into the MCU in the 2019 film Captain Marvel. Since then, they have appeared in both the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home and WandaVision, showing that Skrulls have kept themselves hidden in plain sight while working directly with Fury.
The trailer itself appears to be very light on plot but is very clear that it will be more of a thriller-spy series than some of Marvel Studios’ other Disney Plus shows. The trailer gave fans glimpses of new-MCU additions Emilia Clarke and Olivia Coleman, but the roles that they are to be playing have yet to be disclosed. Fans also were treated to the return of Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, a Skrull who is an ally and friend of Nick Fury.
While Talos may be loyal to Nick Fury, it is clear that not all Skrulls are and that Skrulls have infiltrated the ranks of the humans on Earth. With shape-shifting villains who can take some memories of the people they imitate, it is clear that it will be difficult for Fury to discern who is good and who is bad, who is human and who is Skrull. Barring having powers like Captain Marvel’s, there are not many easy ways to figure out if someone is a Skrull or not!
With the series confirmed to be released in Spring 2023, fans have a while to go before we can watch the new series. One thing that is for certain: a lot of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans are hoping for the return of Chloe Bennet’s Daisy Johnson/Quake in this series, seeing as her character played a prominent role in the Secret Invasion comics and there have been many rumors of her MCU return. As a huge Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Daisy Johnson fan, I myself am largely hopeful for her surprise return, the same way we got Kingpin in Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye and Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home!
Until the upcoming series airs on Disney Plus, enjoy Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk which is currently airing! Additionally, check out our articles on thriller releases in September here, for as exciting and enticing as a new show can be, reading is equally, if not more, thrilling!
