Madame Web is a Sony Marvel movie that has been in the works since 2019. Earlier this year, Marvel announced that Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney and Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson will be starring in the movie. Dakota was cast as the titular character, while the role played by Sweeney is still unknown.
Variety reports that Emma Roberts has been cast in the movie, releasing in 2023. Madame Web will also include actors: Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbuster: Afterlife) and Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold).
This movie is Sony’s first modern comic book adaptation that features a female in the headlining role. The comic book character “Madame Web,” a woman with psychic skills who can see within the spider world, has a genesis tale in Madame Web. Her powers in the comics prove to be very helpful to Spider-Man and his other arachnid pals, but due to her condition she has never engaged in combat with villains.
Madame Web is being directed by S.J. Clarkson, whose credits for Marvel include Jessica Jones and The Defenders. The script will be written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who previously worked together on Jared Leto’s vampire thriller “Morbius.” The movie will debut in theatres on July 7, 2023.
