Hailey Maitland, the writer for Vogue, announced that Dakota Johnson was cast as Anne Elliot in Carrie Cracknell’s Netflix adaptation of Persuasion. This will be Cracknell’s film debut, and prior to this, she worked in British theatre.

Cracknell intends on modernizing Jane Austen’s novel, while also remaining as faithful to the original text as possible–Persuasion, the novel, follows Anne Elliot. Anne was originally engaged to Captain Frederick Wentworth, but she was persuaded by family and friends to end the engagement. After seven years of separation, they meet again–and comedy/romance ensues.

This new adaptation of Persuasion is set to release on July 15th, 2022.
