Adaptations Pop Culture TV & Movies

The popular-2018 novel Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is one of many book-to-movie adaptations coming this summer. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya Clark, this crime drama hits the big screen through Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine. Recently rising to stardom, Edgar-Jones played Marianne in a wildly popular adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People. She also starred alongside Sebastian Stan in Hulu’s hit comedy-thriller Fresh. Others in the cast include Taylor John Smith as Tate Walker and Harris Dickinson as Chase Andrews – two important characters that change Kya’s life.

Official First Looks

So far, the two trailers are set in 1969 North Carolina and show Kya as Barkley Cove’s outcast. “I didn’t know how to do life. I was better off learning from the marsh,” said Edgar-Jones as Kya in the latest trailer’s voiceover. Abandoned by her parents as a child and having attended only one day of school, she runs off to the marsh and learns to live off the land. When it comes to being on her own, her skills are unmatched.

Eventually, two young men from town draw her attention and are curious about her beauty and wild mystery. This opens up a social world she never belonged in. Despite keeping her distance, years of stories about the “Marsh Girl” created an image of her as a wild, ill-mannered girl unfit for society. The endless harassment from townspeople pushes her from any chance at being part of their world.

And when an unexpected death rocks the town, her chances get worse. The lack of evidence and her reputation means she becomes the top suspect. Everything Kya knows is upended as she tries to prove her innocence while discovering her desire for human connection after lifelong solitude.

Where the Crawdads Sing arrives in theaters on July 15.
