Shortly after the announcement that Robbie Coltrane, who played Rubeus Hagrid, in the Harry Potter film series, has passed away, Coltrane’s Harry Potter co-stars expressed their sadness about his passing, sharing fond memories and condolences with his family.
Among these are Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley) and David Thewlis (Remus Lupin).
Radcliffe made a statement to the press, saying “Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set. I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on (2004’s Harry Potter and the) Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”
Other cast members took to social media to express their sadness at Coltrane’s passing.
Bonnie Wright, who plays Ginny Weasley, Ron’s sister and Harry’s eventual wife, posted a tribute on Instagram, while James and Oliver Phelps, who play her older twin brothers, Fred and George, took to Twitter to reminisce over Coltrane in light of his passing.
Matthew Lewis, who plays Neville Longbottom, Harry’s friend and son of Alice and Frank Longbottom, both of whom were tortured to insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange, also took to Twitter to express his sadness at Coltrane’s passing.
It is not only the children who loved Robbie Coltrane, but also the adults. David Thewlis, who plays Remus Lupin, werewolf, one of the four Marauders and eventual husband of Nymphadora Tonks and father of Teddy Lupin, also took to Instagram to express a tribute to Robbie Coltrane.
Coltrane was well-loved by many of the Harry Potter cast and will be sorely missed by all. While Coltrane may be gone, his legacy lives on. He will forever be remembered, not only for his amazing portrayal of Rubeus Hagrid, half-giant and Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts, but also for his humor, his generosity, his kindness, and the love that he had for his family and friends.
