Little Monsters and comics fans alike were united in excitement last night when the first look at Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn for Joker: Folie à deux was revealed on Instagram in honor of Valentine’s Day.
While there’s no outright confirmation of Gaga’s character in the sequel to 2019’s Joker, many are expecting her to take a turn as the very popular sidekick, and sometimes Joker’s girlfriend, Harley Quinn. The imagery revealed from the film so far largely supports her casting being associated with the character. While we don’t know much about the plot for the sequel, it has been revealed that the film will be a musical which makes Lady Gaga’s inclusion a perfect match!
The film stars returning cast members from the first film: Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker and Zazie Beetz as Sophie Drumond. Aside from Gaga, new cast members include Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener in undisclosed roles. Joker: Folie à deux comes out October 24, 2024, from Warner Bros, with director Todd Phillips returning.
The first Joker film debuted in 2019 and followed Arthur Fleck’s journey with his mental issues as he navigated caring for his sick mother with continuous rejection from various jobs as he tries to become a stand-up comedian. All of which leads up to him snapping and becoming the Joker we all know from the DC comic books.
DC Comics has been in the news as of late with James Gunn announcing his new slate for the semi-rebooted DCEU going forward with films, television, and video games all tying into the same continuity. Joker: Folie à deux will be featured as a part of DC’s new Elseworlds branding for films that do not tie into the new semi-rebooted film continuity that James Gunn and Peter Safran announced last month.
