If you’re like me, you watched HBO Max’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts pretty much immediately. There is something so warm and comforting about the films—especially during the winter— and I couldn’t wait to see some of my favorite characters reunite as adults. What I loved most about this reunion, however, were the personal anecdotes from behind the scenes. The cast gave us the inside scoop on not only what the Harry Potter sets were like, but also what it was like to still just be a kid during it all. And with that, we discovered the most surprising inside scoop we could have possibly imagined: Daniel Radcliffe had a hardcore crush on Helena Bonham Carter.
Who would have guessed that The Boy Who Lived would have a crush on a woman who was trying to kill him? One of the shining moments of the HBO special was a moment shared between Radcliffe and Bonham Carter, who played Bellatrix Lestrange. Turns out that after all this time, Boham Carter saved a letter from Radcliffe that revealed his true feelings for her.
The letter read:
Dear HBC
Daniel Radcliffe to Helena Bonham Carter
It was a pleasure being your co-star and coaster…in the sense that I always ended up holding your coffee. I do love you and I just wish I had been born 10 years earlier, I might have been in with a chance. Lots of love and thanks for being cool.”
Turns out Emma Watson’s crush on Tom Felton wasn’t the only romance that created sparks on the set of Harry Potter. Radcliffe was only seventeen when he wrote the letter to Bonham Carter, something of which she finds endearing considered she was forty and in a long-term relationship with filmmaker Tim Burton at the time.
