Romance comes in all shapes, shades, and sizes. Lately, people have been wanting — scratch that, yearning for a good smutty read. It’s all the rage throughout Booktok, with Dark Romance and Contemporary Romance taking the reading books from H.D. Carlton for Haunting Adeline and Emily Henry’s massive collection of Romance novels. However, not all readers may identify with their characters regarding their ethnicity. So sometimes readers may feel excluded or left out when their protagonists aren’t in the image of them over and over… and OVER again.

We at Bookstr also recognize that Black authors are not always uplifted in the same ways as white authors are, so we compiled a list of Black authors who will steam up your glasses or tear up your eyes. Here are 8 Black Authors tearing up the scene with their smut.

PS: Most of these titles do have a POC leading the front!

Aja Owens and Walker Abbott meet unexpectedly at different points in their life where romance is far from their minds. But love is never timed. Walker’s only in Greenbelt, Southern Carolina, to ensure his Grams’s feeling okay, while Aja has many problems of her own that are slowly revealed throughout the story. When the two continue to cross paths, the attraction is undeniable, but they’re both too busy and preoccupied with their issues, so could a Bingo-sex pact be enough?

Katrina Jackson – Contemporary Romance With Some Sizzling Spice

I aspire to be Katrina Jackson. Maybe it’s because we share the same last name… or perhaps it’s because she’s a professor by day and an erotic writer by night. Her stories display love in many ways, following familiar tropes and making it into a unique story. Want a taste of her work? Check out Office Hours, where she guides readers in a romantic heist of sexy professors ripping each other’s clothes off.

Dr. Deja Evans’ life is like a hamster on a wheel. Grading, classes, meetings, research, more meetings — it is never-ending. She did not have a life. The only highlight is when she’s allowed to ogle Alejandro Mendoza, Associate Professor of History, whenever she attends the boring Faculty Senate meetings. Needless to say, she has a bit of a crush, but that crush becomes something way more when they have a steamy after-hours sexual encounter. Will she let Alejandro love her properly, or will she continue her run on the hamster wheel?

IMAGE VIA TALIA HIBBERT

Talia Hibbert has a knack for balancing between sweet, cutesy romance while still keeping it spicy as all else. Get a Life, Chloe Brown balances it perfectly, and it’s truly a piece you want neatly sat on top of your bedside table before bed. Hibbert is a New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal author, and as such, has taken the literary world by storm. Her protagonists? Sarcastic, brave, and interesting individuals.

You may relate to Chloe Brown as much as I do. She’s made a list of things she would like to accomplish regardless of her chronic illness.

  • Enjoy a drunken night out.
  • Ride a motorcycle.
  • Go camping.
  • Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.
  • Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.
  • And… do something bad.

But in order to partake in this fun adventure properly, she needs a teacher. This is where Redford, aka Red, takes her under his wing on all things rebellious. The problem is this handyman motorcyclist/artist is hot… like majorly hot. Through their time together, they learn the many ways of having fun, love and the differences between their livelihoods.

Beverly Jenkins is a classic erotica writer who has been in the game for decades. Her steamy scenes are warm and gooey all in one bite. What’s so special about Jenkins’s work is her ability to navigate historical fiction in the direction of exhilarating storytelling while being able to incorporate steamy scenes in the mix. Check out Rebel to see what I’m talking about.

Valinda’s Lacy is trying to help the newly emancipated community in the heart of New Orleans. But she perhaps may have bitten more than she can chew. He’s on his own mission by trying to rebuild the city he once grew up in. He cannot deny his attraction toward Valinda, and neither can she. But this all comes to a standstill when she’s betrothed to another.

Rilzy Adams – New Adult Has Never Been This Sexy

Rilzy Adams

Rilzy Adams has a lengthy list of smutty fixings for your choosing. Go Deep gives readers the full steam that they have been looking for. Perhaps it’s the most relatable to all the writers that are listed as her heroine is an erotica writer herself. Adams is more than just a writer — she’s also a lawyer! A strong-willed writer and a kick-ass lawyer? Adams is not to be messed with.

It was all supposed to be so simple. As stated, Go Deep follows Navaya Howard, an erotic writer in a dry spell, so to speak. And she and her fellow readers are sick of the stale plotlines. After being celibate for over a year, finding her ex-boyfriend’s side check’s positive pregnancy test, she can’t bring herself to write steamy scenes as she used to. To re-spark that fire in her, she gets her friend Xander to help her… but if any smutty reader knows anything about sex in fiction, sex and love can often be blurred. How deep will they go?

Fantasy, Comedy, Romance, Action, and Spice?! Kimberly Lemming gives all of this to you in That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a DemonExpect to see some light BDSM in some of her novels. Lemming is an imaginative writer who creates fantasy stories out of thin air by bending the fantasy trope to her will.
