You could say you’re celebrating Opposite Day when you really have no idea what that is. Want to know how you can specifically celebrate it as a reader? We’ve got you covered.
Read in a Place You Don’t Usually
Ditch your normal setup and find a new room in the house to set up shop. It might be hard to leave your cozy chair and blanket in the bedroom with the warm lighting, but it’s just for one day! It’s good to switch up things and keep our minds stimulated. You can even take your blanket with you into the living room or go to a coffee shop. It’s the perfect time of year to grab some hot cocoa and find somewhere cozy.
Maybe you go over to a friend’s house so the two of you can read together. Whatever place you deem worthy, just make sure it’s not somewhere you’ve read before. We would even argue that staying in the same room but reading in bed versus your chair will work for this.
Read a Genre You Typically Wouldn’t
I have always been a romance reader, whether that be young adult or adult. I never imagined I would lose myself in a fantasy novel or be on the edge of my seat with a thriller. It took being in a book club and becoming friends with a fellow book lover that made me open up. To celebrate Opposite Day, or really any day, pick up a book at the store or on your bookshelf that you’ve been putting off reading. You might even surprise yourself at how much you like it!
Read Your Latest Novel From End To Beginning
This is an interesting one. Some might even call it crazy. Isn’t Opposite Day about being a little silly and crazy, though? Try reading a novel from the end to the beginning. If you already do this, we have questions. Does it just spoil the whole book? What’s the point if you don’t have the build-up or background that you’d normally get in the first part of the book? We don’t judge, hence why we’re encouraging you to do this one!
Write or Imagine a Scene From Your Book in the Opposite Way
We can guarantee that every book has been a million different things before the final edition that rests in your hands. Writers and editors change up scenes and characters all of the time before they go to print. So, feel free to imagine a scene in the book you’re reading in a completely different way. Try to imagine the characters in a different setting and having a different conversation than what they’re currently having.
If you’re a writer, you can make this even more fun. Ditch the chapter or scene you’re writing and write something else! The joy of fiction writing is that you can do whatever your heart desires. You can kill off the main character that everyone loves in the last book of the series, even if you had them living originally. Don’t Even Celebrate
If you want to be really low maintenance for this holiday, just don’t even celebrate! We won’t hold it against you, and anyone who does probably didn’t even know about this holiday until this article. Just follow your normal routine without switching up a single thing, and technically, you can still say you participated. We love a good loophole, so you are welcome!
Have fun with this day. Silly holidays are ones that should be celebrated — life is too short to think it’s childish. We all have that inner child in us!
