With Sunrise on the Reaping set to become a movie adaptation in 2026, here are five of the most powerful quotes from each of the Hunger Games books.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
“Snow lands on top.”
Told from the perspective of the future president, Coriolanus Snow, this quote is a recurring motif throughout the book. The Snow family used to be wealthy, but after the war, they were forced to live a life of poverty. Initially, this line was said between the Snow family members to lift their spirits, but as the story progresses, it comes to represent Coriolanus Snow’s hunger for power.
Sunrise on the Reaping
“The snow may fall but the sun also rises.”
Before the novel’s release in 2025, readers knew that Haymitch Abernathy had lost everything and gone down the path of drinking. Set 25 years before Haymitch’s mentorship of Katniss and Peeta, the book details all the horrors Haymitch faced in his games and the path that led him to become the drunk mentor in the original trilogy.
This line came from author Suzanne Collins herself, as a message of hope to the readers in the acknowledgements. “To all my wonderful readers,” She wrote. “Thanks for once again returning to Panem and investing in these characters and their struggles, even when you know the eventual outcome. The snow may fall, but the sun also rises.”
The Hunger Games
“I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun.”
This line is a thought that passes through the main character, Katniss, after Cinna gets her ready for the pre-game interview. Prior to this, Katniss had struggled with finding the image of herself she wanted to project to the Capitol. The dress — a jewel-studded, red dress that resembles flames — gives her the strength and confidence she needs to do the interview. Because of its eye-catching design, it also proves to her that she is not a person to be ignored, even though she is considered one of the lowest of the low.
Catching Fire
“‘… I am the mockingjay. The one that survived despite the Capitol’s plans. The symbol of the rebellion.’”
After surviving the Hunger Games, Katniss is nicknamed the Mockingjay by the rebels for her defiant actions against President Snow and the Capitol. Much like the genetically-engineered birds, Katniss survives all the Capitol’s attempts to kill her. While she is initially hesitant to accept this nickname, this line shows her acceptance of the title and all it represents, choosing to serve as a symbol of the rebellion.
Mockingjay
“Fire is catching! And if we burn, you burn with us!”
Katniss delivered this powerful line in an angry, defiant message to President Snow. As The Mockingjay, Katniss broadcasts messages to the people of Panem, exposing the Capitol’s lies. This message had both literal and figurative meanings, as Snow attempted more than once to kill the rebels via bombing and other methods. In this message, Katniss implies that their rebellion is spreading like the flames, and that the rebels intend to bring Snow down…no matter the cost.
