16 years ago, a not-so-known author in her middle 40s decided to publish what became the first book in the series called The Hunger Games. This series holds a permanent position as a ‘must-read’ in every reader’s bookshelf.
The journey of Suzanne Collins through her prime sixteen years of publishing gave the readers another paradise-like dystopia to get lost in. Let’s look back at what made The Hunger Games they are right now and what they promise to bring to the table in the near future.
The Hunger Games Trilogy
The Hunger Games series still stands strong to be a perfect example of dystopia. True to its name, the series revolves around the survival of humans as they fight their way through political and deadly games in a structured arena. In a world of poverty and struggle for power with a dictatorship in the Capital controlling every single breath of its citizens, the tradition of Hunger Games has been going on for years now. Every year, two young ‘tributes’’ are randomly chosen from every district in Panem to participate in the Hunger Games.
Two tributes- two pawns, from each district are promised a luxurious life for their family at the cost of surviving and winning the game. It doesn’t quite sound like a pleasant world to live in, that’s right. Given the detailed structure of the plot, the intense nature of its characters, and above everything, featuring Panem as this inescapable prison for a dystopian world. Such intricacies always drive hard in the readers’ minds, making it sound real.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
One would think that the story ended after three consequent years of the Capitol’s dystopian brutality with the final book- Mockingjay part 2 in 2010. Katniss for the win, yay! Bam comes in the prequel in 2020! The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes came out of nowhere, reviving the spirit of games along with the promise of a feature film based on the novel. The Hunger Games is one big green flag for a book-based movie adaptation, and never disappointing!
Sunrise on the Reaping
And when we couldn’t get enough of President Snow, the sun rose and reaped up a second prequel. As the Mockingjays brace themselves to be wrecked for this second prequel, here’s what they should know about the book.
- Set 24 years before Katniss’s story, the 50th Hunger Games starts with the feature of the Second Quarter Quell. This second (and more promising) prequel is important as our hero, *drumroll* Haymitch Abernathy, sparkles under the spotlight.
- The book, to be printed by Scholastic Press, is ready to pre-order online and is set to be released on March 28, 2025. The buzz created around this book increases the readers’ curiosity as they eagerly wait for the cover to be released.
- The movie produced by Lionsgate is already said to have begun on June 6, 2024, and is set to release on November 20, 2026.
- The movie is being directed by Francis Lawrence who directed all the previous Hunger Games movies.
Readers’ Say
Readers find themselves more hopeful for this second prequel after settling for Ballad of the Songbird and Snakes. All we can do is hope that the movie’s cast does justice to the characters. As much as the storyline and timeline of these series are questioned, it doesn’t go unnoticed how genuine efforts are being made to ensure the continuity of the franchise.
The Dystopia That Continues
The curiosity around dystopia is what drives them to read the genre. Collins has amazingly woven a universe that stands well-established now in the world of fiction. Given the strong foundations of the plot and characters, creativity lies in abundance in the hands of the writer to experiment and control the direction of the story. Katniss’s story laid down all the ground rules of the game and proceeded to show the readers how to win it in its final books. It’s only fair that our villain gets a backstory of his own. There! We get Snow’s pov, showing his actions thoroughly justified, and answering just how the Games made him the leader everyone despised in the main trilogy. The flame of intrigue is rekindled now as the readers’ expectations weigh down the creators’ now more than ever.

Dystopia as a genre is a powerful tool that forms well at the hands of creative and brilliant writers like Collins, as they truly produce magic. Eight months and counting down should be worth the hype Sunrise on the Reaping has created. I’d say that is perfectly enough time to binge-watch and binge-read all the books again, brb!
