Witches, grab your broomsticks and get your potions brewing! It’s finally the most magical time of the year, Halloween season! It is truly the year of witches, especially after the release of Hocus Pocus 2 where our favorite witch sisters returned to wreak havoc. So why not make this Halloween even more magical with some enchanting witchy graphic novels that will definitely put a spell on you?
1. Mooncakes
Nova Huang works at her grandma’s bookshop. She loans out spell books as well as investigates any strange and supernatural incidents that may happen in their town. However, Nova finds a werewolf fighting a horse demon while investigating reports of a wolf within the woods. And even more surprising, the werewolf is Tam Lang, her childhood crush.
Tam has always had a hard time finding a place to call home, always wandering for years. Wolves are in danger as there are dark forces hunting them to claim their magic, so Tam gets help from Nova. They reconnect and possibly even rekindled their feelings toward each other.
2. The Witch Boy
Aster is 13 years old. In his family, girls are raised to be witches and boys are raised to be shapeshifters. However, Aster hasn’t shifted and wants to be a witch which is forbidden as anyone who crosses those lines is exiled.
Suddenly, danger threatens the other boys and Aster can help but only as a witch. With help from a new friend, Charlie, who is non-magical and non-conforming, Aster practices his magic skills and gains enough courage to save his family and finally be himself.
3. Garlic and the Witch
In the village of vegetable people, there are so many people Garlic loves spending time with. There is Witch Agnes, Carrot, and the Count, who is her new vampire friend. Agnes attempted to brew a vegetarian blood substitute for Count. Unfortunately, she is missing an ingredient only found at the Magic Market located far from the valley.
Willing to do anything to help her friends, Garlic prepares to make the journey for the ingredient. However, Garlic seems to slowly be turning human and that scares her despite the assurance Witch Agnes tells her. It might seem normal for her garden magic, but does Garlic want to be human at all?
4. Toil and Trouble
Toil and Trouble bring the witches from Macbeth to life through this retelling focused on their point of view. Riata, Cait, and Smertae are the three fates. They guide and protect Scotland by controlling the line of kings. However, a disagreement between the sisters has caused Riata and Smertae to use men as pawns, including Macbeth being direct to the crown he wasn’t supposed to have.
Honorable Mention: Morgana and Oz on Webtoon
Morgana and Oz tell an enemies-to-lovers story of a struggling witch who meets an angsty vampire. What could possibly happen? Maybe War? Or possibly even love?
Morgana comes from a long line of witches whereas Oz comes from a rival vampire clan. Somehow, perhaps fate and a spell accidentally bring the two together. Morgana and Oz realize they must work together in order to prevent a war between their coven and clan.
This is an honorable mention because digital comics are a different medium and many don’t consider them as graphic novels. Regardless, it is a graphic narrative.
The reading experience is already pretty magical especially graphic novels with their beautiful art illustrations woven with fantastic storylines. So combining these graphic novels with Halloween will make everything even more magical.
