John Green found the idea behind this story by his own charity. As a student chaplain working at a children’s hospital, John Green was introduced to many children who faced the same terrifying diagnosis as his characters. Further, this book itself is dedicated to Green’s own friend, who died at 16 from cancer. His passion and understanding of those who suffer in such a way comes through in his writing. The passion and care he takes toward his characters perfectly encapsulate the heartfelt empathy Green feels toward this specific topic.
