I’m happy to announce this week’s Bookstagrammer, Bree! So, without further ado, we’re going to dive into what makes Bree authentically Bree. Let’s start the interview!
Why did you start your Bookstagram?
I lingered on booktok/bookstagram through the beginning of the pandemic and really rediscovered my love of reading during that time. I didn’t take the plunge until the beginning of 2022, and at that point, I was feeling isolated and just wanted to talk to other people about my favorite books. I didn’t even consider the impact it would have on my life at the time!
Where are you from?
Orlando, FL!
What’s a fun fact about you?
I used to work as a preschool teacher! Children’s literature holds a special place in my heart.
What are your favorite books and authors?
I could list them all day, but my go-to authors are Abby Jimenez and Emily Henry. I love romance, but I need the pain (and even a few tears!) before the happily ever afters, and they always deliver!
What’s on your TBR List?
It’s truly never-ending, but a few books I’ve recently added are Quicksilver by Callie Hart, The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood, and Catch the Sun by Jennifer Hartmann!
How often do you post?
I post daily or every other day. I’m a very chatty, sociable person in-person, and it extends to my online presence. I always have something to share, whether it’s a meme I made, a life update, or books that I think other people should read!
What’s your aesthetic/Instagram page theme?
I’ve always loved aesthetics! I have a background in graphic design, so bookstagram has become a creative outlet of sorts. I’ve always been a fan of a simple, bright look — I have my signature shade of grey, use lots of pinks, and love adding a soft yet vibrant filter to my images! I cycle between photo content and graphics and love maintaining a checkerboard style when I have the energy to! My page primarily focuses on romance books, but I feature the occasional fantasy or thriller!
What does your Bookstagram mean to you?
Bookstagram started out as a way to share my love of reading when I didn’t have anyone else in my life who shared my interests! Eventually, though, it became the center of my social circle. So many of my in-person friends were originally bookstagrammers who I connected with online before we moved our friendships offline! Bookstagram even connected me with the indie bookstore I now work for!
What’s your favorite bookstore?
I’m very biased towards Spellbound Bookstore, where I work part-time as a bookseller/events assistant! It’s an indie bookstore in Sanford, FL (which is about an hour northeast of Disney World). We have four different book clubs, monthly activities, and local author meet-and-greets!
Who would you have supply you with a lifetime of books?
I think I could live happily only reading Jessica Joyce books for the rest of my life. I had the pleasure of reading her debut months before its release and haven’t stopped recommending her books ever since! If you haven’t read her latest release, The Ex Vows, I highly recommend it! It’s so tender and soft, and I could wax on about it forever.
What author would you love to take a selfie with?
I’m fortunate enough to have met so many of my favorite authors through book conventions and signings! I’m still holding out for an opportunity to meet Emily Henry and Casey McQuiston, though!
What’s your favorite book cover?
Grady Hendrix’s Horrorstör is so iconic to me. It’s a horror novel that follows a bunch of overworked, underpaid retail employees as they’re forced to work an overnight shift at what’s basically a haunted fictional IKEA, and the book design mimics a furniture store manual! Definitely makes an immersive reading experience!
When did you know you had made it as a Bookstagrammer?
The first time I felt like I’d “made it” was when I was invited to be an attending influencer at ApollyCon, a fantasy and romance book convention in Washington, DC! It was definitely an experience I’ll never forget. I got to connect with some amazing content creators, authors, and longtime bookstagram friends in person!
What advice do you have for aspiring Bookstagrammers?
Let your personality shine through your content! When I first started my bookstagram, I felt the pressure to do what everyone else did—use the same filters, do the same challenges, and post about the same books. I was afraid to let my authentic self shine through. However, it wasn’t until I started being more authentically “me” that I began building a community around me that saw and loved me for who I was!
