If you didn’t know already, there’s a new Avengers movie coming to rescue the last remnants of whatever is left of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released in May 2026, bringing to the screen a new villain from the comics: Doctor Doom. Not only is a new villain entering the multiverse, but the beloved essence of Iron Man is joining him. Follow along as we explore who Doctor Doom is and how Robert Downey Jr. claimed yet another legendary Marvel character.
Who is Doctor Doom?
During the San Diego Comi-Com, Marvel made a surprising announcement that Robert Downey Jr. would play Victor Von Doom. Now, some of you might be wondering how it is possible that RDJ, who played Tony Stark, can play a different character after such an iconic role as Iron Man. But the simple answer is that it’s just another character that an actor has been cast. To dismiss any confusion, Doctor Doom is known for never taking off his iron mask, so there’s no mistaking him for Tony Stark among the Avengers.
Nonetheless, Doctor Doom, aka Victor Von Doom, is a completely different character than Iron Man. Doctor Doom first made his appearance in Fantastic Four #5 in 1962, created by the legendary duo of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. After he had lost both his parents, Von Doom discovered his mother’s mystical artifacts and began dabbling with the dark side. After an experiment gone wrong, he was expelled from his university and was left with scars on his face. Overwhelmed with anger and consumed by bitterness at the cruel twists of fate, Von Doom journeyed to Tibet, seeking a release for his fury.
There, he overpowered a group of monks, mastering their hidden knowledge. With this newfound power, he commanded them to craft a suit of armor and an iron mask, vowing to conceal his disfigured face from the world forever. As Doctor Doom, he returned to his native nation, Latveria, and overthrew its monarch, renaming the capital Doomstadt. In his quest for absolute power, he expanded his brilliance in science, delving into robotics, advanced weaponry, and even the uncertainties of time travel. Firmly established as Latveria’s ruler and with a vast array of resources at his disposal, Doctor Doom embarked on a mission to dominate the world, free his mother’s soul from damnation, and prove his superiority over Reed Richards — the only man whose intellect might rival his own.
Iron Man or Doctor Doom
Downey’s Stark is charismatic, witty, and flawed — a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist who evolves from a self-centered weapons manufacturer to a self-sacrificing hero. But how could Downey Jr., who has become synonymous with Iron Man, possibly take on the role of one of Marvel’s greatest villains? Here’s how he could make it work:
- Despite Doctor Doom’s villainous nature, he is a leader who commands respect. Downey Jr.’s natural charisma, which made Tony Stark so beloved, could translate well into Doom’s magnetic presence. Doom isn’t a cackling, mustache-twirling villain; he’s a ruler who genuinely believes in his cause. Downey Jr. could bring depth to Doom, making audiences understand — and perhaps even sympathize with — his motivations.
- Robert Downey Jr.’s take on the role of Doctor Doom could allow him to craft a new legacy within the MCU. Having already established himself as one of the most beloved heroes, Downey Jr. could flip the script by portraying one of its greatest villains. This role would challenge him as an actor, allowing him to explore a darker, more complex character while giving fans a fresh and unexpected performance.
While the idea of Robert Downey Jr. playing such a character may seem surprising initially, this challenge could make his portrayal so compelling. Downey Jr. has the acting potential, charisma, and depth to bring Doctor Doom to life in a way that would be both faithful to the comics and fresh for Marvel. Nonetheless, RDJ is making a once-in-a-lifetime comeback to the MCU.
From Hero to Villain
Doctor Doom is a villain who believes in order, dabbles in sorcery, and yet has a twisted sense of honor. Portraying such a multi-dimensional character on screen is no small feat, which is why the idea of Downey Jr. stepping into Doom’s metal boots is both intriguing and challenging.
Robert Downey Jr. is stepping into the dark side and playing a new role with a different mask. It will definitely be interesting to see how Downey would portray such a different character than Iron Man. But, at the end of the day, RDJ will always be remembered as Tony Stark/Iron Man.
