With only one month left till the release of Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion, Marvel Studios has released two new promotional videos as well as character posters for the main characters of the upcoming Disney Plus series. Marvel Studios has already released two trailers for the upcoming series, which will air on Disney Plus, starting on June 21, 2023.
Promotional Videos
The official trailer of Secret Invasion was released a month ago and gave us a more detailed look at the characters who first appeared in a teaser trailer last year during San Diego Comic-Con.
The synopsis of Secret Invasion stands thus:
“In Secret Invasion, set in the present-day MCU, Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.”
It’s All Connected
Recent interviews with the director, Ali Selim, and producer, Jonathan Schwartz, of Secret Invasion, revealed that the upcoming Marvel Studios show will be darker, grittier, and a more adult-in-tone thriller than previous Marvel Studios projects. Secret Invasion is inspired by Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was about the rise of Hydra and Hydra infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D., but “takes it a step further”.
Back when Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out, the Hydra infiltration was also featured in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1, where S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Grant Ward was revealed to be an undercover Hydra agent. Similarly, Secret Invasion will likely reveal that a well-known MCU character was a Skrull all along. Both the Winter Soldier arc of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Secret Invasion was promoted with the tagline ‘Trust No One‘, which indicates that no one is who – or what – they seem.
Starring Characters
Secret Invasion will star Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, Emilia Clarke as G’iah, Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, Don Cheadle as Rhodey/War Machine and more.
Secret Invasion has been promoted as a “crossover” show, likely due to the influx of pre-existing Marvel characters from other movies and shows. However, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and comic book fans are still hopeful that Chloe Bennet’s Daisy Johnson/Quake will return to the MCU in Secret Invasion, due to her character’s popularity in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the character’s involvement in the Secret Invasion comics.
Behind The Scenes
Ali Selim directs the series and executive-produces, collaborating with fellow executive producers Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Ali Selim, Kyle Bradstreet, and Brian Tucker. Kyle Bradstreet is the head writer, and Jennifer L. Booth, Allana Williams, and Brant Englestein serve as co-executive producers.
Secret Invasion is the first Marvel Studios series in Phase 5 of the MCU and will tie directly into the upcoming movie The Marvels, which will come out on November 10, 2023.
