Get excited, Legally Blonde fans! Everyone’s favorite on-screen lawyer is returning in a prequel series from Reese Witherspoon’s media company, Hello Sunshine, in partnership with Amazon Prime Video. Keep reading for everything you need to know about the upcoming show!

The Origin of Elle Woods

Most people first encountered Elle Woods in the 2001 film Legally Blonde, in which Reese Witherspoon made her debut as the bubbly young lawyer we all know and love. However, the first appearance of this iconic character was actually in Amanda Brown’s self-published novel of the same name, which inspired the original movie, as well as two other film adaptations and a musical. Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde came out in 2003, followed by the Legally Blonde musical in 2007 and the direct-to-video Legally Blondes film in 2009.

The success of the 2001 film earned Brown a traditional publishing deal, and the novel was re-released by Time Warner Book Group UK (now Hachette Book Group) in 2003.

The Return of an Iconic Character

Though it’s been over 20 years since the release of the Legally Blonde book and its first film adaptation, Elle Woods remains a beloved character, which makes her return to the screen all the more sensational! The news of Elle’s comeback was first announced at Amazon Studios’ upfront presentation on May 14 in New York City, where the company also unveiled plans for a Tomb Raider series written and directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, a sequel to the hit Red, White & Royal Blue film based on Casey McQuiston’s bestselling rom-com, and new seasons for popular Prime Video shows like The Boys, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Reese Witherspoon will act as an executive producer of the series, along with Lauren Kisilevsky, Marc Platt, and Lauren Neustadter. The series’ creator, Laura Kittrell, will also serve as showrunner and an executive producer. The show, entitled Elle, will follow Elle Woods during her high school years as she navigates the ups and downs of teenhood and grows into the strong, vivacious young woman we see in the films.

Of the upcoming series, Witherspoon said:

I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series! Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?!

What About Legally Blonde 3?

Fans still awaiting the release of the previously announced third Legally Blonde film might wonder what this new prequel series will mean for the upcoming movie. But don’t fret, Elle Woods fans. Legally Blonde 3 is still in the works!

Originally teased in 2018, Legally Blonde 3 was first slated to premiere in 2022. However, the team behind the film is taking their time to do the franchise justice, which is why the initial timeline has seen such significant delays. The project is currently in the script-writing phase, with Emmy award-winning comedy writer Dan Goor and actress Mindy Kaling teaming up to bring the story to life. While much remains unknown about the film, Kaling has revealed that Legally Blonde 3 will follow Elle Woods in her 40s:

What is Elle Woods like at 42? Does she end up becoming all the things she wanted? How does that personality manifest in a grown woman? Has she become more cynical? Her brightness and her cheerfulness really worked when she was 22, but how has life changed her perspective on things?

Reportedly, Reese Witherspoon will be reprising her role as Elle Woods, and Jennifer Coolidge will be returning as Paulette Parcelle. Cast members from the previous films — including Luke Wilson, who played Elle’s love interest Emmett Richmond, and Selma Blair, who played Elle’s foe-turned-friend Vivian Kensington — have also expressed their interest in returning for this third installment.

Regardless of when the film will finally premiere, what its plot will be, and which cast members will return for it, one thing is for certain: Reese Witherspoon won’t settle for less than perfection. In a 2022 interview, she stated:

I feel like these characters are my friends, so I safeguard them. I would never make the subpar, mediocre version of their story.
