One of George R.R. Martin’s favorite fantasy series may finally be brought to TV screens with the help of late-night host Stephen Colbert. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Colbert’s production company, Spartina, has teamed up with Skybound Entertainment to adapt Roger Zelazny’s The Chronicles of Amber series into a fantasy-drama series.

Martin has expressed his desire to see Chronicles of Amber adapted to TV for years, even writing about it in a blog post. “I am a fantasy fan, and I want more fantasy on television… Most of all, I want Roger Zelazny’s Nine Princes in Amber,” Martin wrote in October. “I will never understand why Corwin and his siblings are not starring in their own show. And hey, if epic fantasy continues to do well, maybe we will finally get that. A boy can dream.”

Though Martin isn’t involved in the upcoming series, Colbert expressed his excitement about the show, saying,

“George R.R. Martin and I have similar dreams. I’ve carried the story of Corwin in my head for over 40 years, and I’m thrilled to partner with Skybound and Vincent Newman to bring these worlds to life. All roads lead to Amber, and I’m happy to be walking them.”

It’s well known that Colbert is a colossal fantasy fan, repeatedly showing off his impressive knowledge of The Lord of the Rings on various episodes of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. CEO of Skybound Entertainment, David Alpert, said he’s thrilled to work with Colbert to bring the series to life.

“Producing it alongside someone like Stephen Colbert, who is a true-blue super fan, is a thrill for me, and will be for anyone who’s ever listened to Stephen talk about fantasy,” Alpert said. “We can’t wait to share this amazing story both with the legion of current fans like ourselves and a new generation of fans that will undoubtedly fall for Amber.”

Zelazny’s The Chronicles of Amber follows Carl Corey, who wakes up in a New York hospital with amnesia. As he investigates, Carl learns the truth of who he really is: Prince Corwin of Amber. As royalty, Corwin is one of nine men who might rule Amber. But first, he has to fight his way through the armies of his older brother, Eric.

“[Zelazny is] a storyteller without peer,” George R.R. Martin said. “He created a world as colorful and exotic and memorable as any our genre has ever seen.”
