Sabrina Carpenter announced earlier this year that she would be coming out with a new album, Short ‘n’ Sweet available for everyone on Friday, Aug. 23. As her sixth studio album, this will be her largest tour yet with bigger venues and more fans. The Espresso and Please Please Please singer announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, on June 3 that she would be coming out with a brand-new album and teased the possible cover art for the upcoming album along with another surprise later that week.

Espresso was released earlier this year in April, while her second single for the upcoming album, Please Please Please was released earlier this month on June 6. Both songs are still currently on the Billboard Hot 100 with Please Please Please hitting number one this week, Carpenter’s first song to go number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and Espresso at number four on the charts. Given her immense success and trajectory toward stardom, it is not surprising her tour sales crashed the Ticketmaster site during presales on June 25.

Sabrina Carpenter’s Early Career with Disney

Carpenter first gained recognition when she starred in Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World (2014-2017), the Boy Meets World spinoff where she played Maya Hart, Riley Matthew’s best friend. During her time on Disney Channel, she even made a cameo appearance on Austin & Ally in 2013, the same year she signed with Disney-owned then-label Hollywood Records and released her first single in 2014, Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying, which was co-written by Meghan Trainor. This song also became the title for her first EP, featuring four other songs in 2014.

In 2015, Carpenter released We’ll Be the Stars as her lead single for her first studio album, Eyes Wide Open and the second single released for this album was Eyes Wide Open. The song peaked at number 43 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 12,000 copies in its first week. She was still very involved with Disney then and even won two Radio Disney Music Awards. The following year, Carpenter released a new single, Smoke and Fire, which was heavily promoted and played on Disney Channel. It was rumored that the song was about her then-boyfriend, fellow Disney Channel star, Bradley Steven Perry.

During her time with Hollywood Records, Carpenter released four studio albums including Eyes Wide Open, Evolution, Singular: Act I and Singular: Act II, and she even went on three concert tours between 2016 and 2019. She also opened for Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman Tour in São Paulo in 2017. During the release of her third and fourth studio albums, Carpenter began to reflect more on her personal life and covered topics in her songs about her struggles with anxiety. Before COVID-19 hit, she was starring in the Mean Girls production on Broadway but did not return when the show started running again, instead she starred in a film by Disney+, Clouds.

Life After Disney

Carpenter announced in January 2021 that she was signing with a new label, Universal Music Group’s Island Records, and released her first single with the new record label, Skin. Her fifth studio album, Emails I Can’t Send, had two lead singles which were Skinny Dipping and Fast Times, was released in 2022 and was Carpenter’s most popular album release at the time. Other singles released for this album were Vicious and Nonsense, both are very popular, Nonsense even became certified Platinum by RIAA. In September 2022, she started her Emails I Can’t Send Tour and, at the beginning of 2023, she released a deluxe version of the album with the single Feather topping the Hot 100 chart at 21, her highest charting song at the time.

Nonsense became very popular and went viral while she was on tour because of her tradition of changing the ending verse of the song at every tour stop. To this day, Carpenter continues to change the lyrics, which excites fans everywhere as they patiently wait for what lyrics she says next. Feather also earned some controversy for her decision to film the music video in a Catholic Church; however, she revealed that she had received permission before recording the music video there.

As Carpenter continued to grow into her stardom and newfound popularity, Taylor Swift invited her to be the opening act for The Eras Tour in Latin America, Australia, and Singapore show from 2023 through 2024. After performing at The Eras Tour, Carpenter earned herself a handful of more fans ready to support her next moves and music. This popularity followed her into her 2024 release of the viral hit of the summer, Espresso. TikTok users used the song for a wide variety of videos, allowing the song to trend and quickly grow, throwing Carpenter to a new point in her career. Carpenter even appeared at Coachella and had a stellar setlist and performance, garnering her more positive attention.
