Capitalizing on its long streak of book adaptations, Amazon has decided to add E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars to its Prime Video collection of on-screen portrayals of popular stories. First revealed to have entered development with Universal Television as the producer three months prior, plans to bring the book series to the big screen have continued to move forward under the helm of The Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec and Roswell, New Mexico co-creator Carina Adly MacKenzie. Additionally, E. Lockhart herself will be joining the team as an executive producer for the series.
After enjoying relative success with previously popular book adaptations such as Jack Ryan and Daisy Jones & The Six, Amazon continues to expand upon its Prime Video line-up with Lockhart’s beloved 2014 young adult drama novel series.
We Were Liars introduced the readers to the wealthy Sinclair family during their annual vacation on their beautiful island located off the coast of Massachusetts. Taking on both the aspect of a thriller and love story, the novel reminds its audience that behind every seemingly perfect life lies a dark contrast, one that threatens to confront its characters with the consequences of their past actions.
While an official release date has not yet been unveiled, fans of the book series have much to look forward to with Plec and MacKenzie collaborating on the project, both of whom carry a track record of writing for popular shows. In their joint statement following the adaptation announcement, both women had this to say:
“We’ve been obsessed with this beloved story for years and for a while it seemed like it might be the one that got away from us. But finally, we are elated to be bringing it to life with everyone at Prime Video and UTV, who are just as passionate about this twisty tale as we are.
