Fly into the world of Harry Potter with this sports simulation game based on the broom and ball sport that fans of the series know right away as Quidditch. Two teams compete to gain points by scoring goals through large hoops in the sky and catching the golden snitch. The story of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions isn’t the main selling point because this game focuses on a career mode where you meet goals to progress. It’s a bit weird to think that something tied to the popular franchise doesn’t have a strong suit in its storytelling, but what it lacks in story, it has strength elsewhere.
Quidditch Without a Hitch
The last time Quidditch had a spotlight was back in 2003. Finally, over 20 years later, the famous wizarding world sport has been given another chance to shine. The character roster in the game is vast, bringing in characters from the main series and some characters from the video game Hogwarts Legacy. It might be a bit jarring to see characters like Sebastian Sallow playing on the same team as Draco Malfoy, considering they were born years and years apart, but this game doesn’t care about that. It’s all for the sake of fun. The game lets you pick and customize your team based on the outfits they wear, the brooms they fly on, and their positions on the team.
Personalization Options
As the player, this customization allows you to create your dream team. You can make your beaters tough and your chasers agile, or you can take opponents by surprise by making your beaters quick and your chasers hardy. This game allows you to build the perfect team and strengthen the positions you want to focus on. Even better, you can choose which position you want to play. Whether you want to chase the quaffle as a chaser to score points, play as keeper to keep the enemy points low, or threaten people with a bludger as a beater, you can switch positions while in the middle of a game.
Playing the Game
To win a game, you must score 100 points, with each goal equaling 10 points. This is where the customization of your players comes into play. If your chaser is quick, send them down the field and juke out the keeper for a quick ten points. Or, maybe your chasers are agile and can pass the quaffle between themselves and fake out the keeper. If you lose the ball, switch to a beater and fling the bludger so your opponent fumbles the quaffle, and you can scoop it up.
Tweaking the Game Rules
The seeker, by far the most important player on the team, has a bit of a rule change in this game. Normally, when a seeker catches the golden snitch, the game ends, and the team who caught the snitch wins. However, this game treats the snitch as 30 points instead of a game-ending condition. Because this is a video game, it makes sense that the snitch wouldn’t end the game abruptly as that would frustrate players. After all, why bother playing the rest of the game if the snitch determined the game’s ending? Giving it a small but hefty point total makes the snitch a critical part of the game while not making it the main objective.
While fans of Harry Potter expected Hogwarts Legacy to have a minigame featuring the magical sport, this is the best option for people wanting to take flight on brooms and zip around the wizarding world’s most famous sport. It’s not going to sweep the sports simulation industry, but it will captivate fans of the series.
