Death Note is a psychological thriller involving a cat-and-mouse chase between Light Yagami and L, both intelligent in their own right. While Light tries to become the new god of the world with the Death Note, L tries to catch the unknown killer evading the police. Given the story’s balance between absurdity and serious drama, it’s been hard for the franchise to get a well-made adaptation. With the latest attempt being Death Note Killer Within, fans might be in for a fun game that’s also faithful to its source material.
Death Note Killer Within
Based on the game’s trailer, you — the player — are on either Light’s or L’s side. You can choose to kill off potential threats in your conquest for world domination or get hold of the Death Note before more people die. But you won’t be playing alone. In a structure similar to Among Us, up to 10 people can play the game. Not knowing who’s on either side, the goal is to uncover who your opponents are as you complete tasks set out by Light and L. With avatars based on the anime (that also look like that huge creepy doll from Squid Game), players get to be part of the world of Death Note.
Why The Game Will Work
Unlike other Death Note adaptations that flopped, like the 2017 American live-action movie, this iteration seems to understand that the franchise’s focus on psychological battles doesn’t lend itself to a fighting game. Taking the anime’s brilliant focus on Light and L’s mental battle, the game hones in on who is trustworthy among the characters you meet.
Part of what could make this game successful are its parallels to Among Us. The latter’s gameplay is set in a spaceship, where getting caught gets you thrown into space and out of the game. The same might happen in Death Note Killer Within, with its goofy-looking characters being placed in a menacing-looking city instead. As such, the game could very well balance the comical side of its source material with its darker themes. After all, Light killing people with the Death Note while dramatically eating a potato chip is one of the anime’s most iconic scenes.
It appears Death Note Killer Within will only feature Light and L as absent figures instructing players on what to do throughout the game. Nevertheless, we’ll surely get to hear the iconic Kira laugh the anime is known for. Will you be playing?
