Firstprince fans, rejoice! On May 9th, Deadline confirmed that Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit a sequel to Red, White, & Royal Blue, the movie adaptation of the book of the same name from Casey McQuiston. Read on to learn everything we know about the project so far.

Movie Adaptation Makes Record-Breaking Debut

When Red, White, & Royal Blue made its premiere on August 11, 2023, it became the top movie globally on Prime Video during its premiere weekend and would hold that spot for the next three weeks. Since it landed on the streaming platform, the movie has become one of Amazon’s top three romantic comedies of all time.

Ever since Red, White, & Royal Blue was announced, fans had been eagerly anticipating the movie’s release. Although they were excited at the prospect of a new queer romantic comedy based on the best-selling novel, they were apprehensive about the creative liberties taken.

Of course, like any adaptation, there were some changes that fans had some problems with. Several characters and relationships were omitted or changed drastically — some of the biggest changes being with the Claremont-Diaz family. In the book, Alex has an older sister, June, who makes up the well-known White House Trio with Alex and Nora. Also, Ellen and Oscar are divorced, and Ellen re-married before her presidency.

Despite these changes and the fans’ skepticism, Red, White, & Royal Blue proved to be a massive success. The fandom for the movie’s couple, First Son of the United States Alex Claremont-Diax and Prince Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor, was already active before the movie’s release. Since the premiere, the fandom has only grown, resulting in hundreds of fanfics, fan art, and other forms of appreciation for the couple.

Details on the Impending Sequel

During a Q&A event ahead of Amazon’s yearly upfront presentation, director Matthew López announced the news that there is a sequel in the works. The plot of the sequel is unknown, but López and McQuiston are writing the script. Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are set to return as the leads, reprising their roles.

McQuiston’s novel is a stand-alone, so there isn’t any more material from the book universe for the movie team to bring to life. So a lot remains a mystery surrounding this sequel, including when it will be set after the original movie. A popular fan theory before the sequel was officially announced was that any continuation of the film would feature Alex and Henry’s wedding, but the director and the book’s writer have so far not dropped any hints about what they have planned.

As of this writing, it’s not confirmed when the filming will start for the sequel or when it will be released.
