Circe by Madeline Miller

But in a solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the earth. Such a constellation was he to me.

Circe by Madeline Miller book cover

I love this quote because of the gorgeous imagery. I don’t know why, but I love it when romance is framed through the metaphor of space. The comparison of love to celestial entities always makes the romance feel so grand and extraordinary. Madeline Miller’s descriptions of love — in Circe, as well as her other novels — always make my heart swell with emotion. When I read this quote in particular, I couldn’t help but get swept up in Circe’s passion and fondness. When I think of romance, I think of this quote, and thus, it’s stuck with me for many years.

Defy Me by Tahereh Mafi

Aaron always fell in love with her. Every time.

Defy Me by Tahereh Mafi book cover

I absolutely love this quote from Mafi’s Shatter Me series. Aaron Warner and Juliette/Ella are my OTP and favorite book couple to exist. This quote just exhibits their undying love for each other — specifically Warner’s love for Juliette. They had their memories wiped repeatedly because Aaron kept falling in love with Juliette every single time, and it was impossible for them not to love each other like Aaron’s father and Juliette’s parents had hoped. The fact that the man would forget who she was and everything he knew about her and kept repeatedly falling in love with her is just so beautiful.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew I had begun.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen book cover

I think this is the most romantic quote from the book. Mr. Darcy is finally admitting that he’s been in love with Elizabeth Bennet for a long time, and before he even knew he had started loving her, he was already in the middle of it. I just think it’s so romantic that he’s telling her he’s been loving her this whole time, he just didn’t know it.

Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I know there may be universes out there where I made different choices and they led me somewhere else, led me to someone else. And my heart breaks for every single version of me that didn’t end up with you.

Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid book cover

This quote made me start crying when I listened to it through audiobook. The whole book centers around two timelines of Hannah’s life where she makes very different decisions. This quote is said twice in both timelines where they end up at the same place. The best way that I can describe how I feel about this quote is that it’s like a gut punch wrapped in a warm hug. This quote captures a complex blend of emotions with such raw honesty that it’s impossible not to feel a tug at your heartstrings. It’s for the romantics, the dreamers, and anyone who’s ever loved and lost, yet still believes in the magic of what could have been.

A Thousand Heartbeats by Kiera Cass

Love has a sound. It sounds like a thousand heartbeats happening at the same time.

A Thousand Heartbeats by Kiera Cass book cover

This quote really resonated with me. I opened the book and there it was on the inside front flap. With this quote, I already know that this book is going to take me on a wonderful journey. I can’t wait to start reading. I am in love with this book already. It feels magical to me. Any book that can draw you to it with just two sentences is clearly an extraordinary book.

The Herbwitch Princess by Ireen Chau

[I first proposed] as a prince out of duty. I’m asking now as a man in love […] I want to be yours, as Bennett. If you will have me.

The Herbwitch Princess by Ireen Chau book cover

I just think this quote is really smooth and earnest. The couple in question starts off in an arranged engagement, with no romantic pretense whatsoever. So, for their relationship to come full circle with a proposal that doubles as a love confession was satisfying to read.

The Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White

And I’d choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I’d find you and I’d choose you.

The Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White book cover

This quote embodies how I feel about my husband. No matter what, no matter when, I would seek him out and find him to always be mine. He is my other half, my soul mate, and I wouldn’t want to spend eternity with anyone else by my side.

Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe

But we loved with a love that was more than love.

Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe book cover

This is my favorite line in the poem because it expresses how much the narrator loved her. It was the type of love that goes beyond the word love. A love so powerful that the narrator believes the angels were jealous and had her killed to end their romance. That’s the type of love I feel from that line and want to feel. The type that would make angels jealous.

As we close the chapter on our exploration of these romantic musings, we carry with us a renewed appreciation for the artistry of love in literature. From the poetic verses of Shakespeare to the modern declarations of contemporary authors, these quotes serve as beacons of hope, reminders of the beauty of connection, and testaments to the enduring nature of love. They are more than just sentences strung together; they are whispers of the heart, echoes of our deepest desires, and reflections of the profound impact that love has on our lives. In the tapestry of human experience, these romance quotes are threads that bind us together, weaving a narrative of passion, longing, and the eternal quest for true connection.
