Colleen Hoover became a worldwide phenomenon when her books began trending all over social media platforms, mainly TikTok, in 2020. Her most notable releases include It Ends with Us, Ugly Love, and Verity. Now, her books are being adapted into films, the first one premiering later this summer that follows the story of It Ends with Us with Justin Baldoni as the director and stars Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively.

Verity would be Hoover’s third adaptation, the first being Confess, which was turned into a TV series in 2017. Confess only ran for one season on Go90, with seven episodes starring Katie Leclerc and Ryan Cooper. It Ends with Us is Hoover’s second adaption, set to premiere in theaters on August 9. Even with little detail on Verity’s adaptation, fans are already excited to learn more and are eager to see it on the big screen.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh as she becomes a ghostwriter for the ultra-popular author, Verity Crawford, who gets into a tragic car accident and is left in a coma. Verity cannot move and is unresponsive to those around her, but she is awake. To get in the proper headspace and write like Verity, Lowen begins living in Verity’s home, along with her husband, Jeremey, and son, Crew. Verity and Jeremy have an extensive history, all of which Lowen learns about when she discovers Verity’s unpublished autobiography while looking for old copies of her famous book series.

This manuscript is the basis of the book, and things become dark and twisty in this psychological thriller romance. Lowen learns secrets Verity has kept hidden from Jeremy as she falls in love with Jeremy and his son. Crew is Jeremy and Verity’s only living child since the tragic deaths of their twin daughters. Only, maybe this manuscript was not a secret from Jeremy? Readers have to make their own guesses and assumptions at the end because no one knows where the lies end and the truths begin.

Verity plays tricks on the readers’ minds and makes them second-guess what they already believe to be true. Lowen is not an unreliable narrator, however it is unclear if her writer’s imagination is playing tricks on her and the readers. Verity and Jeremy and their relationship are also a big mystery to readers, everyone is hiding something, but the ending only leads us to wonder and want more.

Verity’s Film Adaptation

Similar to other popular films like Gone Girl and A Simple Favor, Verity takes the audience on a dark and warped road, leaving them distrustful of the characters involved, making for a perfect crazy, chaotic thriller. Verity was picked up by Amazon MGM Studios in May 2024. However, as of June 2024, details of who is starring in it, when it will be released, and who the director is have yet to be revealed.

It was announced that Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund would lead Verity’s production with Amazon, but it has not been confirmed if Verity will have a theatrical release like It Ends with Us or premiere on Amazon Prime like other book adaptations produced by Amazon, such as The Idea of You. What we do know is that Hillary Seitz, of the notable films Insomnia and The Unforgivable, has been announced as the writer for this latest adaptation.

Verity’s release may be contingent on how well It Ends with Us does at the box office. With gaining over 128 million views in the first 24 hours of the trailer’s release, it is possible It Ends with Us will do quite well in theaters, pushing Verity to an earlier start.
