Colleen Hoover is one of the most popular romance authors of all time, and her most popular book, It Ends With Us, was just released in theaters on August 9. Bringing in over $80 million opening weekend, the movie is clearly making just as big a splash as the novel.
Adaptation Inspiration
It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover was published in 2016 and has spent the past 132 weeks (more than 2.5 years) on the New York Times‘s Best Seller List. It tells the story of Lily Bloom, a florist who falls in love with Ryle Kincaid, a neurosurgeon. As the story progresses, Lily’s relationship with Ryle becomes more and more disturbing, and she begins to reminisce on her first love, Atlas Corrigan. When he reappears in her life, Lily’s relationship with Ryle begins to struggle.
At its heart, It Ends With Us is a story about domestic violence and those who struggle with it. It shows what it is like to be caught up in a cycle of violence and the feeling of an inability to leave that situation. Lily knows that she loves Ryle and that he has been good to her in the past, but she is also aware that she deserves better. It is not an easy read, but it is an important one; for too long, abusers have had all of the power in their relationships. Hoover sheds light on these stories through her writing and urges people to truly understand the position people like Lily may be in.
Bringing the Book To Life
The film does a brilliant job of bringing this important story to life. Blake Lively (Lily Bloom) and Justin Baldoni (Ryle Kincaid) work wonderfully together, and every element of the story works together to make this a painfully beautiful watch. The film’s release date was August 9, and after it is done in theaters, it will be moving to Netflix. Wherever you are when you watch it, make sure to keep your tissues handy.
Future Adaptations
Regretting You
Now, let’s discuss the other film adaptations Hoover has in the works. Regretting You, published in 2019, will be adapted by Deadline. It is set to be directed by Josh Boone, the director of (The Fault In Our Stars) and written by Susan McMartine (After). Allison Williams has been cast as the leading lady, Morgan, and our favorite young actor, McKenna Grace, will be playing her daughter, Clara. As of right now, there is no official release date for this film.
Verity
Hoover also has another book that was announced to be adapted by Amazon MGM Studios back in May: Verity. The thriller follows a small author who has been hired to finish the series of an incredibly popular author after she has been involved in a tragic accident. The main character moves in with Verity’s husband and son and begins to take up the position she left, but Verity isn’t gone yet. No further information has been released about the film.
