Game of Thrones fans have been waiting for new material since the disappointing final season aired on HBO in 2019. While their focus has remained on George R.R. Martin’s unreleased GoT books, HBO has created a spin-off called House of the Dragon to quench fans’ thirst for fantasy.
This new series is based on Martin’s 2018 novel, Fire and Blood, and focuses on the House of Targaryen. Regarding the show, Martin has expressed his surprise at it being the most anticipated show of 2022. He can’t believe that his series topped so many new series: “Amazon’s new Tolkien series? Neil Gaiman’s ‘Sandman’? Marvel shows? ‘Star Wars’ shows?” But he does go on to express his gratitude for the fans, and even states that he “loved [the preview]. It’s dark, it’s powerful, it’s visceral… just the way I like my epic fantasy.”
Anyone who’s anyone knows that one of the biggest twists to the original GoT series involved the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen, so it will be interesting to see her family’s backstory play out on television. The series stars Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans, and so many more incredible actors. And although there is no official release date yet for the show, you can be sure that we will be watching out for it. Perhaps House of the Dragon will redeem the final season of Game of Thrones?
