Romance tropes are a significant aspect of the genre. They create a solid foundation for romance novels and inspire the cute, romantic scenarios we imagine before bed. But as summer turns into fall and everything becomes a little more orange, the eerie essence of autumn grows deep within our chests, and we find ourselves craving something that’ll fit the spookiness of the season. So, we’re putting a scary twist on ten famous romance tropes to turn happily ever afters into hauntingly ever afters…

Meet-Cute
A meet-cute is a sweet, funny, and sometimes awkward first encounter between two characters. Whether they bump into each other and send their bags flying or accidentally grab each other’s coffee orders, meet-cutes are usually posed as happy coincidences or accidents that kickstart a lovely relationship. But what if this encounter wasn’t as inadvertent as it seems? For our scary twist on this trope, one of the characters would stalk their love interest, learn their tastes in partners and romance, and memorize their daily routine for months until they’ve created and executed a perfect “accidental” meeting. Then, the stalker would use the information they’ve learned about their love interest to forge a connection between them. In the end, the stalker gets their sweetheart all to themselves as long as they can keep the lies and secrets under wraps.
Love Triangle
The love triangle trope is most often portrayed as two people being romantically interested in the same person. In some cases, the two begin to subtly compete for their love interest’s attention in hopes that they’ll pick them. Our twist on this trope leans into the competition and animosity between the two characters and pushes their limits to horrifying lengths. Their subtle rivalry becomes a dangerous one-on-one game of schemes, blackmail, and murder. Only one will come out of it alive and get the chance to live their happily ever after with the love interest (that is assuming the love interest feels the same way and doesn’t mind being with a murderer).
Forced Proximity
The forced proximity trope has taken the romance genre by storm recently. There’s nothing more intimate than two characters agreeing to share a space and growing closer within it (bonus points if there is only one bed, and they wake up cuddling after trying to stay on their respective sides). Most of the time, the characters end up in these predicaments unintentionally and choose to stay because it’s the best or only option they have, like their hotel only has one room left or the owners of a cabin accidentally double-booked the weekend. Our twist consists of the same reasoning, except one of the characters planned it all out. They went through great lengths, like reserving every other room in a hotel or glitching the booking site to allow double-booking a room, just to get the opportunity to be alone with the other character. Whether it be because they’re an obsessed stalker or plotting something even more sinister, this twist will make us paranoid about sharing spaces with people.
Road Trip
In romance novels, two eligible singles on a road trip almost always lead to the two being half-way in love with each other by the time they reach their final destination. The proximity mixed with all the time they’ve spent together intensifies and enhances their feelings for each other. Our twist on the road trip trope draws inspiration from Bonnie and Clyde, real-life murderers who embarked on a road trip of their own in the 1930s. What starts as a road trip full of romantic chemistry and teasing arguments over radio stations goes haywire when a little accident results in our main characters covering up a murder. As they dump the body, they soon realize they enjoy the thrill of the ride and turn their innocent road trip into a thrilling murder spree.
Runaway Bride
The runaway bride trope is when a bride runs away from her groom mid-wedding. This is usually because they have cold feet, met someone new, or don’t want to lose their independence. However, for our scary spin, the bride is running away due to much more dangerous and paranormal reasons. Since the moment the bride met their partner, weird, paranormal things have been happening to them. As their relationship progresses, so does the paranormal activity. It comes to a climax at the wedding, when the bride is being tormented by a ghost and rapidly losing their grasp on reality. All that is left to do is run.
Grumpy x Sunshine
The grumpy x sunshine trope always makes for a sweet read. Characters with opposite personalities coming together to create a balanced dynamic is swoon-worthy stuff! For our twist, our grumpy character’s crabbiness is due to a little more than just their personality. This grumpy character is actually a hungry vampire. With each day that goes by without them feeding, they get more and more irritated. After weeks without human blood, the vampire begins to lose their sanity until all hell breaks loose. Sunshine better hope their ravenous partner will spare them from the carnage.
Amnesia
The amnesia trope involves a character rediscovering their identity after an accident causes them to lose their memory. In romance novels, they might fall for their caretaker or rebuild their relationship with a past partner. A bone-chilling spin on this trope is that the incident that caused the characters’ amnesia was really an accident. Instead, someone from their past, like a toxic ex, snuck back into their life by planning out the incident and pretending they had never met before. Now all they have to do is hope that when the memories come back, the love interest will let go of the past. If not, they’ll have to try again.
Unrequited Love
Unrequited love is one of the saddest romance tropes, but it is so rewarding when the love interest finally reciprocates the character’s feelings. We love it when one character falls first, but the other falls harder! But what if the pining character falls into a deep obsession with their crush? Their craving for them escalates with every second they spend together until they’re willing to do quite literally anything for them, including getting rid of anyone who has shown even a sliver of romantic interest in their sweetheart. As they are consumed by their obsession, the love interest begins to piece together that a local serial killer is targeting people close to them.
Small Town
Small towns are the perfect background for cozy romances and cheesy Hallmark movies.
There’s something about the strong sense of community that makes you never want to leave! In our spooky spin, you can’t leave. Once you pass the welcome sign, the town begins to suck the life from you until all you are is a perfect and polite neighbor. When someone’s car begins to give out on them on the freeway, they pull into town in search of a mechanic. The mechanic, having already accepted that there’s no way out once you’re in, doesn’t bother trying to fix it. That is, until the driver begins to realize the dark truth about the town and works with the mechanic to find a way out before it’s too late.
Normie Dates a Celebrity
The normie dates a celebrity trope gives us hope that our celebrity crushes may one day fall in love with us. However, this relationship dynamic usually brings on challenges like choosing between keeping the relationship secret or receiving hate from the public. Our couple would be dealing with much scarier issues, like the devil. While selling their soul to the devil in exchange for fame, the celebrity swore that being famous would be their only priority. But then a normal person sweeps them off their feet, and the celebrity has to figure out how to keep the devil satisfied without compromising their relationship with the normie.
Romance tropes are already entertaining on their own, but adding a spooky twist makes them even more interesting! It also makes us reconsider every romance novel we’ve ever read… We hope you enjoyed this list and feel inspired to come up with some of your own twists on popular tropes!
