In the years since Gypsy-Rose Blanchard started her prison sentence, she has become a kind of pop culture figure as people awaited the day she was released. Many found Gypsy-Rose’s conviction unfair given the abuse she suffered with her mother, who allegedly suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a condition where parents or caregivers make their children sick with real or fake symptoms.
In the days leading up to her release from prison on December 28th, 2023, many took to social media to create satirical videos of them picking Gypsy-Rose up from prison.

Since her release, Gypsy-Rose has only gained an even larger following, joining Instagram and TikTok to share photos and videos of her life with her new husband and family. As of this writing, she has 8.1 million followers on Instagram and 9.6 million followers on TikTok.
Now on parole from prison, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard uses her freedom to tell her story on her terms.
A Notorious Case
In December 2023, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard was released on parole after serving eight of a ten-year sentence for the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Shortly after her mother’s body was discovered, Gypsy-Rose and her then-boyfriend Nick Godejohn pled guilty to the murder. Gypsy Rose was convicted of second-degree murder, while Nick was convicted of first-degree murder.
Gypsy-Rose garnered international sympathy as the trial revealed the child abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother. Since her trial and her entry into prison, several films, shows, and books have been made on the case, focusing on the cruelty of Gypsy-Rose’s childhood and the events leading to her mother’s murder, as well as those subsequently taking place after.
In Her Own Words
On January 9th, 2024, Gypsy-Rose released a memoir to tell events from her perspective. The e-book, Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom, covers memories from her childhood, from her time in prison, and looks to what she wants out of the future. It features exclusive content like interviews recorded with Gypsy-Rose in prison, personal photos, and a letter from Gypsy-Rose to her mother for a class exercise.
Since her release from prison, a Lifetime docuseries, The Prison Confessions of Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, featuring exclusive interviews with Gypsy-Rose in prison, has also been released.
