“We’ll all fly away together…one last time.” Following in the footsteps of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is the teaser trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, featuring the return of one of the MCU’s favourite found families!
The Guardians of the Galaxy return one more time, for the third and final installment of their Marvel trilogy. Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Kraglin (Sean Gunn), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) return after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for what appears to be their final adventure.
Unless they return in Avengers: Kang Dynasty and/or Avengers: Secret Wars, of course!
The synopsis of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stands as thus:
Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own from a new devastating enemy. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.
Gamora’s death took place in Avengers: Infinity War and while the rest of the Guardians have returned in both Thor: Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora returns for the first time since Avengers: Endgame in this movie. She comes back as a younger version of herself who travels to the present in Avengers: Endgame, now serving as the leader of the Ravagers.
Aside from Gamora’s return, the film’s main plot centers around the foul-mouthed, gun-toting Rocket, who might finally unravel his mysterious origins. Some of the new characters who appear are Rocket’s comic book love interest, Lylla, an anthropomorphic otter, and Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock, a powerful artificial being created by the Sovereign to destroy the Guardians.
In addition to the release of the teaser trailer,
Marvel has also released the first poster for the upcoming movie. James Gunn, writer/co-writer and director of all the previous Guardians of the Galaxy movies and holiday special, declares that he felt “a lot of pressure” to get Vol. 3 right, adding, “It really matters to me that we end this story well.”
In a statement, he shared,
“I’ll be honest, I started looking at all the trilogies that have existed throughout time, and in most trilogies, the third movie is awful. There’s a couple of exceptions, but when I say a couple, I mean like two or three. It’s very rare that the third movie in a franchise is good. So, it was important to me that we really ended this story in a good way.”— James Gunn
“A lot of Vol. 3 is going back to the beginning so that we can really see the end. We see the importance of Rocket’s character and who he is. It was just important to me that it worked and that I did everything I possibly could for the sake of these characters and for the fans. So, I put my all into it.”— James Gunn
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is part of Phase Five of the MCU and will premiere exclusively in theaters starting on May 5, 2023. Until its release, watch the Guardians of the Galaxy in other Marvel films and specials on Disney Plus and check out our other Marvel-related news here!
