Initially splashing onto the comic book page in 1939, the character of Batman has spanned a lengthy history that has established his narrative in comics, radio, television, video games, and, of course, movies. Bob Kane would continue to illustrate Batman’s story in printed comics throughout the 1940s. Eventually, Batman made his way to the television screen in the 1960s.
Leading the DC universe, the Dark Knight is one of the most notable superheroes in pop culture history. He is a character that has been translated into different mediums and, even to this day, is still relevant in mainstream society. To be able to cover all the different representations of Batman would require a lengthy project. So, for this Bookstr article, let’s take a look at the most famous portrayals of Batman in film and television.
Adam West, Batman 1966-1968
Decades before voicing Mayor Adam West on Family Guy, West popped onto the scene with Batman with a pow and wham! Donning extremely campy costumes and delivering kitschy, but clever dialogue, the original Batman television series proved to be a pop culture phenomenon that is still treasured as of today. This is made evident when you ask people today who their favorite Batman is, and their reply is Adam West. It is a role that he will always own.
Michael Keaton, Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992)
Batman’s first major film appearance was cast by Michael Keaton, also known for his role as the mischievous Beetlejuice. In this depiction of the billionaire vigilante, Keaton establishes Bruce Wayne’s wealthy playboy status. While both films were directed by Tim Burton, Batman confronts some of his most memorable foes, such as The Joker (played by Jack Nicholson) and The Penguin (played by Danny DeVito).
Kevin Conroy, Batman: The Animated Series (1992)
No Batman list would be complete without mentioning Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman. Conroy took on the role of voice actor for Batman: The Animated Series, beginning in 1992. The Animated Series aired until 1995, but Conroy continued voicing Batman until his passing in 2022. One of his most famous troublesome counterparts was also The Joker, but this time voiced by Mark Hamill, who is famous for his role as Star Wars’ Luke Skywalker.
Val Kilmer, Batman Forever (1995)
Unfortunately for Kilmer, his depiction of Batman did not live up to his predecessor, Keaton. Possibly the best thing that came out of Batman Forever was Seal’s Kiss by a Rose theme song. In a recent interview, Kilmer blamed his failed performance on the mobility limitations of his costume. His movements are definitely contrasted with his animated co-stars, Jim Carrey as The Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones as Havey “Two-Face” Dent.
George Clooney, Batman & Robin (1997)
But the film that possibly buried the franchise, until its revival almost a decade later, would be George Clooney’s Batman & Robin. Comparable to Kilmer’s role, the film just lacks the same fun attitude that the previous representations contained. Even with a star-studded cast from the 90s (including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Alicia Silverstone, and Uma Thurman), Rotten Tomatoes rates the movie as 12%.
Christian Bale, Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, this new trilogy breathed new life until the retired vigilante. Dropping most of the comic book style and appearing more as a large-budget blockbuster, Bale gives Batman a new dimension to describe his narrative. His most notable villain was The Joker, cast by the late Heath Ledger. The Dark Knight series is a trilogy that is able to create a whole new universe apart from Batman’s other representations.
Ben Affleck, Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), Justice League (2017), Zack Synder’s Justice League (2021), The Flash (2023)
Before taking on the role of Batman, Affleck was not a stranger to superhero roles, as he comprised his role as Daredevil years before the Batman reboots. Affleck has mentioned both his roles as Daredevil and Batman were inspired by his love of Frank Miller’s 1986 Dark Knight series.
Robert Pattinson, The Batman (2022)
The latest actor to be cast in the role of Batman is none other than Robert Pattinson, also known to book lovers as Edward Cullen from Twilight. When photos were initially released of Pattinson in this role, the brooding attitude was strong with the black shadowed eyes. There are talks that Pattinson wants to retire from the role already, but negotiations are under way for a sequel for his rendition of the Dark Avenger.
