Are you ready for a new scary movie? Horror fans are in for a treat with the adaptation of FAITH: The Unholy Trinity. The pixelated cult-favorite horror game, created by Airdorf Games, has terrified players and now will terrify audiences. But…what is FAITH: The Unholy Trinity?
Exorcisms, Redemptions, and 8-Bit Graphics
FAITH: The Unholy Trinity came out in 2017. The 8-bit game has players play as a priest piecing together the story of a failed exorcism. As the priest wanders through homes and forests, his past comes to light. Not only was he guilt-ridden, but in the process, he lost a young girl’s life. His faith comes into question as he navigates the pain of his actions. Ultimately, the game tells this story of guilt, redemption, and the perseverance of faith alongside the story of exorcisms and demons.
A game that truly sets players at unease, FAITH: The Unholy Trinity creates a deeply terrifying scene of a man misled in life. The ability of the game to create such a frightening story through such a pixelated visual structure is a feat of the game developers’ ability and skill in the genre.
The Adaptation
Who exactly is bringing this game to life on the big screen? Brandon Salisbury! Salisbury has been in many horror fans’ radar already because of his upcoming documentary on George Romero. The director has shown his great interest in the genre through his upcoming productions. In addition to his new documentary, Salisbury is also producing a horror film. It comes as no surprise, but great intrigue, that his name is attached as writer and director for this upcoming adaptation.
Producer Steve Barton is joining Salisbury on this project. Barton has brought audiences the sequels Terrifyer 2, Watch If You Dare To, and All Hallow’s Eve Trickster. Barton won’t be working alone in the production scene for this project. George Demick, a producer on Salisbury’s documentary, will also be producing the adaptation. Demick has a long history of developing horror stories, which provides great hope for the future of this project. With these two executive producers are producers J.J. Trulock, Carson Demick, and Chris Macgibbon.
The game production company behind the game itself is also expected to be an executive producer of the adaptation.
New Approach to Horror
It’s exciting to see such an interesting source material be adapted in such a way. It’s not often that such a game – let alone game style – is developed in this way. This could start an interesting shift in horror – setting a precedent for source material and horror storytelling.
Instead of developing franchise-built games, like Resident Evil or Outlast, stepping into the world of cult-adored stories could bring unknown and original ideas to the screen. In a world of adaptation after adaptation, this involvement with such an indie game is especially exciting and fascinating. Not only do the fans of the game get to see their favorite indie story come to life, but audiences are exposed to a story they may be completely unfamiliar with.
Adaptation Release Date
As this announcement only brings news of the official development of the film adaptation, it is unlikely that we will see even a trailer for the project until late 2025. With so little known about the development so far given the earliest of stages that the project is in, one thing is for sure: there is only more news to come.
While we wait for more details, we’ll need some ways to keep us occupied in the meantime, such as Zudoka, which has plenty of online solitaire games to keep our minds busy.
FAITH: The Unholy Trinity is a groundbreaking and downright eerie story that is able to bring fear to its players through 8-bit gaming. As a player of this game, the development of this work into a film will certainly bring a new level of storytelling to the tale. If the writers and game developers are able to scare through pixels, I can only fear what they’ll be capable of with a live-action production.
