The best-selling author of The Dark Love series, Kat T. Masen, has been busy these past few months. With her dark romance series, her expertise in the romance genre is sound. However, even with her talent in writing, she has been creating her own bookstore, Books Ever After, a romance book-based store full of special edition copies, one-of-a-kind merch, and book events. However, that is not the only thing keeping her busy. She has written a fast-paced, small-town romance novel, much different from her dark romance counterparts.
How To Break My Heart is the first book in the Cinnamon Springs series, which will consist of standalone romance novels that are still interconnected in their own way. Between multiple romantic tropes, a hectic wedding, and a cute little donut shop, this story is the perfect read while sipping a pumpkin-spiced latte under a warm blanket. Masen has nailed the tactic of a cozy read, and let me tell you, I sped through this book like my life depended on it. Its release date is September 23, 2025, so let’s tell you what you need to know about this book before it drops!
Synopsis
Eva has quite a mundane life. Her best friend constantly traveled, and she returned to their small East Coast town. Together with her friend from college, they open a donut shop, and everything is precisely where it is supposed to be. Right? Well, that is what Eva tries to think. She knows she is missing something big, but can’t name it. Her family moved and owns a farm, her brother moved to Paris and opened a restaurant, and she is still stuck in Cinnamon Springs.

That is, until her best friend Maddy returns from a vacation with her short-term boyfriend, engaged, and now Eva has to plan the wedding. The worst part? She has to prepare it with Maddy’s brother, Aston, whom she hates and hates her just as much. After an awkward moment in high school, nothing has ever been the same between them, and now they are forced to work together to get this wedding up and ready in a month. Nothing is going as planned: the wedding, the shop, and especially her hatred for Aston, but her best friend’s brother is off limits, isn’t he?
Nothing is going as Maddy or Eva wants, but will she pull off this wedding for Maddy and keep Aston at arm’s length?
A Utility of Tropes for Intense Romantic Tension
“Vanilla isn’t always so bad, now is it, Miss Woods?”
Kat T. Masen, How To Break My Heart
How to Break Your Heart masterfully leverages classic romance tropes to create an unforgettable reading experience. By building the story around forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers, and a slow-burning romance, the author creates a deliciously torturous narrative that will keep you glued to your couch.
The book’s greatest strength is its laser focus on the central relationship, which creates an intense and captivating romantic tension that drives the entire plot forward. While this single-minded focus means that some subplots, like Eva’s dream of buying a house, aren’t as deeply explored, this is a minor detail in a book so overwhelmingly focused on delivering a powerful and satisfying romance. The intensity of the central love story is what makes this book a must-read for any romance fan.
A Barrel of Laughs Offsetting the Cynical Atmosphere
“God, I’ve lost the plot.”
Kat T. Masen, How To Break My Heart
What makes this story stand out is its masterful blend of sharp wit and sincere emotion. The humor isn’t just a side note; it’s a vital part of the story’s DNA, perfectly placed to give depth to the cynical characters and their intense relationships. This isn’t the typical enemies-to-lovers banter; instead, the jokes create a unique personality for the characters, making them feel incredibly relatable to a Gen Z audience.
While a few jokes might feel a little out of place during intense moments, they ultimately serve a purpose by highlighting the main character, Eva’s, awkward and authentic nature. Her humor, even when it doesn’t quite land, makes her all the more lovable and true to herself. It’s a welcome dose of levity that prevents the story from becoming too heavy, and I genuinely appreciate its inclusion.
Fast Paced Slow Burn Read
“Your type is exactly who I stay away from.”
Kat T. Masen, How To Break My Heart
Unlike many slow-burn romance novels, this one is a breakneck, high-octane ride. Clocking in at under 300 pages, the story keeps you on your toes with non-stop drama and character interactions. While some slow burns can feel a bit sluggish, this book is all action, from crazy wedding planning to intense family drama. Author Kat T. Masen expertly balances the reader’s anticipation for the main couple’s romance with a rich, bustling world, making for a truly dynamic reading experience.
The fast-paced plot makes the slow-burn romance shine even brighter, creating a delightful contrast. The trade-off is that some subtle plot details can be easy to miss. I was so engrossed in the constant action that I overlooked some crucial clues, leading to a genuinely shocking plot twist at the end. Instead of detracting from the story, this unique pacing choice makes for an engaging, re-readable book where you can go back and uncover the breadcrumbs you missed the first time around.
The humor is a major highlight, perfectly balancing the heavier scenes. While some of Eva’s jokes land at awkward moments, they ultimately feel true to her character. Her witty, sometimes clumsy, humor makes her feel authentic and relatable. It’s a welcome contrast to the cynical characters often found in enemies-to-lovers stories, providing much-needed joyful moments that enhance the overall feel of the book.
Refreshing Take on Small Town Characters
“So, you’re trying to say that you’re not getting laid, hence the attitude today.”
Kat T. Masen, How To Break My Heart
Masen’s novel subverts the typical small-town romance by featuring cynical, complex characters who are all searching for happiness. This departure from the norm creates a compelling, layered atmosphere that draws the reader in and makes their eventual journey to a happily-ever-after feel well-earned and deeply satisfying.
The characters in this story, from Maddy to Aston, are refreshingly real and flawed. Rather than being simply “pleased,” their cynicism serves as a starting point for powerful, believable character arcs. The journey to their happily-ever-afters is genuinely moving because we’ve seen them overcome their struggles, making us root for them even more.
While some small-town romances offer simple escapism, this book delves into the complexities of love and life through its cynical yet captivating cast. The author’s willingness to embrace these characters’ inner turmoil makes the story’s moments of hope and redemption all the more impactful. For those who enjoy a deeper, more realistic romance, this book is a must-read.
