I don’t know about you, but a good matchmaking movie is the perfect ingredient for a real laugh. It is my personal favorite when it all ends with the classic “happily ever after” mantra. I am confident that I have found seven of the best matchmaking romances. Hopefully, you like them as much as I do!
Just Go With It
Now, I’m going to keep it real here, this is my comfort movie. If I had a rough day at work or if someone cut me off on the highway, this is the movie I turn on. Not only does it have my two favorite celebrities, but it also has a great message about honesty with those around you and yourself.
Jennifer Aniston stars as Kathrine Murphy, a single mom of two kids, and the assistant to a plastic surgeon in California. Adam Sandler stars as Dr. Daniel Maccabee, a plastic surgeon with awful commitment issues. One night at a party, Danny meets Palmer and immediately feels a connection with her. The issue at hand pertains to the lie Danny keeps up, and that is where the adventure begins. Danny promotes Kathrine and her kids to be his fake soon-to-be ex-family, as they make their way to Hawaii with Palmer. There, they will embark on an adventure where new characters are introduced around every corner.
Danny will soon find out that the one he really wants may have been sitting in the office with him the whole time. Just Go With It is an absolutely hilarious story that brings families together, and a comedy that you truly won’t want to miss.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Andie Anderson, played by Kate Hudson, is an advice columnist who attempts to challenge and advise the public and readers. Her new piece, however, is something completely out of the ordinary, as it goes through the ways to get a man to leave after only ten days. Ben Berry, played by Matthew McConaughey, remains a confident romantic who thinks he can make any woman fall for him in just ten days. Fate comes together as Ben and Andie meet at a bar, and immediately become each other’s bait. As they slowly get to know the truth about the other, sparks fly, ball gowns are worn, and the rush of time is truly the only villain.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is an absolute classic in the romantic comedy genre. I remember watching this as my first “big girl” movie with my mom and adoring it! This silly little romcom meets matchmaker is a movie you won’t forget.
Hitch
Alex Hitchens, played by Will Smith, is better known as Hitch, the date doctor. Alex’s latest project is focused on Albert Brenneman, a nerdy financial consultant who fell in love with the famous Allegra Cole, but as Hitch assists Albert with his love life, he struggles with his own. Hitch starts falling for a workaholic named Sarah Melas. Unfortunately, due to Sarah’s past relationship, she labels Hitch with a reputation he doesn’t entirely deserve. Hitch goes above and beyond to prove his love, as well as helping Albert with his love for Allegra. All he needs is three dates, and usually, after that third date, it can be classified as love.
In Hitch, the matchmaker has to use everything he knows to get the girl of his dreams. This silly old-time 2000s classic was a hit at my house when I was a kid, and now it can be a staple at yours!
Emma (2020)
Emma is based on the novel written by Jane Austen, and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Miss Emma Woodhouse. Emma is a wealthy and elegant young lady who lives with her father in Regency-era England. As amusement to pass the days, she considers herself a matchmaker, meddling in her closest friends’ romantic lives. Meddling further, she befriends a naive woman by the name of Harriet Smith and persuades her not to accept a marriage proposal from a farmer, and instead introduces her to a local vicar. A man by the name of George Knightley tells Emma of his disapproval, but as they argue about such things, George asks her to dance, and sparks begin to fly.
Now, this is one of those movies with many plot lines, so I won’t spoil it, but this is yet another story where the matchmaker ends up being the one matched up. I have always loved Jane Austen, so when I found out that Emma came out back in 2020, I was ecstatic.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Now, I’m not exactly sure about you, but I am a big believer that the book is always better, yet this is my gray area. This movie and cast have my eternal love, and as a high schooler when it came out, I wished to live the life of Lara Jean Covey.
Lara Jean, played by Lana Condor, faces the ache of her older sister leaving the country for college. In Lara Jean’s closet was a box she thought no one knew about, filled with letters from all of the boys she had loved, but kept them instead of mailing them. When her little sister, Kitty, finds out about the letters, she mails them. Some of them were outdated, but those that weren’t posed some questions from the boys who received them. One of the recipients, in particular, is her ex-best friend’s ex-boyfriend, Peter Kavinsky. As Peter attempts to confront Lara Jean, another recipient tries to talk to her as well, except it is her older sister’s now ex-boyfriend, Josh.
Lara Jean and Peter create a ruse to secure him getting back together with Gen, his ex, and to make sure Josh doesn’t think she is in love with him. As they play the parts of doting boyfriend and girlfriend, lines are crossed, fate is intertwined, and feelings are undeniable. This is the first book and movie of the series, so make sure to read and watch them!
The Parent Trap (1998)
Lindsay Lohan stars as a pair of twins, Annie and Hallie, in this updated film of The Parent Trap. Annie and Hallie don’t know they are twins until they meet at a summer camp. As they get to know each other, they realize their parents have kept them a secret from each other, and they create a ploy. They will pretend to be the other, go home with the opposite parent, and at one point or another, they will be forced to switch back. In the 1998 classic updated version of the original 1961 film, it brings out a whole different side of the story, as the girl’s father is newly engaged to a heinous woman.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch The Parent Trap yet, I highly recommend snuggling up with your favorite blanket on a cold, rainy night to partake in this sweet and homey adventure. I hope you enjoy it!
Set It Up
Set It Up is one of the handful of romcoms that came out back in 2018, starring Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Taye Diggs, and Lucy Liu. Harper and Charlie are two overworking assistants who have a silly meet-cute, which isn’t so cute. As they begin to get to know one another, both assistants complain that they have no time for their personal lives. Harper makes a joke that both of their bosses need to get laid, then creates a ruse to get their bosses to start dating each other so they will have less time to overwork their assistants. When Charlie’s girlfriend almost breaks up with him because he doesn’t have much free time, he agrees to help in the ploy.
Though their plan doesn’t exactly go the way they thought, love brews in their air, and feelings are stronger than logic. Set It Up is one you will definitely love if you enjoy matchmaking movies. Be sure to grab your favorite snacks, because this one is truly hilarious.
