An ultra-alluring, sensual take on vampires, this captivating book and movie has truly made for a delectable reading and watching experience again and again. Debuting in 1988, Anne Rice’s third installment of The Vampire Chronicles series, The Queen of the Damned, entered our worlds and dark hearts, and we couldn’t help but once more devour the vampire Lestat on the page. And ,once the movie was released in 2002, we took to theaters to let our eyes eat of the characters and sensually gothic scenery of the 90s displayed on the big screen. And while the book is highly enthralling and deserves to be gushed over, we’ll focus on some of the epic scenes of one of the most iconic vampire movies of all time. With that, we bring you six of the best scenes from The Queen of the Damned.
Lestat’s Concert (Slept So Long/Not Meant For Me)
If there was ever a scene to put you in a captivating trance and make you feel as if you were right there swaying along, it’s the only concert that Lestat gives. We join him in the desert, where the cold of the night goes unnoticed due to the rising heat of our bodies as we dance, entranced by Lestat’s rasp yet silky voice and the melodic sound of the music pumping through us. And though we know he’s not singing directly to us warm-blooded beings, it feels like he is. But we all know who these Lyrics are for. Don’t worry, we’ll come back to that later!
Lestat Plays Violin on the Beach/Learns What It Means to Be a Vampire
A recently made vampire, Lestat is new to the world of old he once belonged to. He’s no longer man but a creature, and both cannot dwell in the same realm, walk the same road, or exist in the same space — not for very long, and certainly not unless you plan for man to become your prey! This brings us to the scene where Lestat attempts to mesh the two worlds of creature and man by joining a young woman and her father in a spirited play of music that enchants and excites Lestat’s senses. But when he plays too well, and his eyes glow like white fire and hunger, the party is over. And, as Lestat’s mentor and Maker, Marius, emerges from the shadows to shield his protege from exposure, the group is all too quickly and viciously whittled down to two!
Lestat Taunts His Fellow Vampires — “Come out, Come Out Wherever You Are!”
Ahh, you’re still with us. Good! Now, recall that we mentioned Lestat’s musical taunt to a certain group. Well, now the time is upon us to set our eyes on Lestat’s virtual interview, where, from some unknown hideaway, he speaks past the crowd of reporters and fans and happenstance listeners to the only ones who will fully grasp his message. Here, Lestat calls out the vampires hiding in plain sight. The ones who lurk in the dark and who, too, know the secret Lestat boldly proclaims to the world — vampires exist! With a smirk on his face and hiss in his tone, Lestat dares his fellow vampire brethren to join him in the light, but what a way to go about it!
Lestat Plays Violin for Queen Akasha
Before he was taunting his fellow vampires with his songs, Lestat was a freshly turned vampire who still enjoyed the finer points of life, such as the twinkling melodies of classical music. After all, he’s quite an old vampire now, but once he was just getting his bearings as a new one, going from man to creature. With that comes loneliness, a time and place Lestat wasn’t yet familiar with. So he played his violin. And he played and played. That is until he discovered a hidden passage leading to the stone likeness of Queen Akasha and her King. There, Lestat entertained the queen, who indeed delighted in Lestat’s talents, showing her pleasure by allowing Lestat to drink her ancient blood. And what a rush that was! Had he not, we wouldn’t be here — now, would we?
Akasha’s Entrancing Dance in the Vampire Club
This sinfully luscious dance set to slow, rhythmic EBM music truly raises the heat as the Queen of the Vampires makes her entrance and takes clubgoers by surprise. The swoonful way in which Queen Akasha moves is both entrancing yet heart-pounding and nerve-racking. One must wonder as she twists her hips and snakes her way through the crowd, “What is she going to do?” And lo, the other vampires are put on edge, hissing like cats ready to strike. Strike they do, and down they go with a flick of the queen’s hand. And she never even breaks a sweat!
Drinking the Last Drop of the Vampire Queen (*Spoilers!)
We come to the end, where the allure and lusciousness conclude in a most ravenous, desperate attempt for self-preservation that makes this scene both heart-stopping and heart-rendering — the (permanent) end to Akasha’s tyrannical reign. This queen has had her fill of both human and vampire alike, and now her children of the dark no longer wish to stand by and allow their Queen Mother to continue feasting on them or dying by her hand. And so, she must be stopped. To do this, we witness, with sorrow in our hearts, Lena Olins’ character, Maharet, sacrifice herself, taking into her the last drop of Queen Akasha’s blood, dissolving the vampire queen to ash and turning our sacrificial lamb to stone. Not the most fitting end, but a necessary one.
