It’s National Girlfriends Day! To celebrate, we’ve compiled a list of fantasy book girlfriends who would do anything and everything for the one they love.

WARNING! Major spoilers ahead for these books/series. Make sure you skip any you don’t want spoiled!

1. Emma Carstairs – The Dark Artifices series by Cassandra Clare

Emma Carstairs has proven time and time again that there are no limits to what she would do for Julian Blackthorn. With her notorious fighting ability, Emma grew up viciously protective of her parabatai, and remained that way. Throughout the series, she went to extreme ends to keep him from getting hurt, like when she knocked him out and took the punishment from the Wild Hunt in his place.

2. Aelin Galathynius – Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

When I say “girlfriends who’d burn down the world,” I mean that quite literally with Aelin. With her immense power, she probably could. I mean, she once set Maeve’s entire city on fire in order to free Rowan Whitethorn. Granted, she didn’t actually burn anything, but she easily could have if Maeve didn’t free her love.

3. Fury Axtar – Crescent City series by Sarah J. Maas

Another Sarah J. Maas character, because these girls really are on a whole different level when their significant others are threatened. Fury Axtar is an assassin in love with the graceful and kind dancer, Juniper Andromeda. These two may be total opposites, but Fury’s ruthless nature comes out to play when it comes to ensuring her girlfriend’s well-being.

4. Poppy Da’Neer – From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

There is no question that this all-powerful character would do anything for Casteel Da’Neer. We saw that happen in The Crown of Gilded Bones, when Poppy nearly took down a city to get to her kidnapped husband. Honestly, these poor cities keep getting roped into stuff like this.

5. Nesta Archeron – A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas

Nesta is known for her cold, seemingly heartless personality. Despite her character arc in ACOSF in which she copes with her trauma and reconnects with those around her, I have no doubt that that cold-bloodedness will quickly make a reappearance to protect her mate, Cassian.

6. Alessandra Stathos – The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

Although Alessandra plans on killing the Shadow King, she finds herself desperate to keep Kallias alive. The more she falls in love with him, the more protective she becomes. Considering that she killed her first lover just for breaking her heart and staged an elaborate, brutal plan to become Queen, I would say she’s morally gray enough to sacrifice whatever or whoever it takes to save the man she loves.
